The Brett family celebrated their son Jake’s Bar Mitzvah at Bridgeview Yacht Club in Island Park, New York. They wanted an urban cool vibe at the evening celebration and with the help of some creative Mitzvah vendors, their theme worked out perfectly.
We want to thank the Bretts for sharing their ideas with our Mitzvah Market readers.
All party photography was done by Simphonic Events.
Pictured (L-R) Dad Steve, Bar Mitzvah boy Jake, big brother Jordan and Mom Sue. Sue found her Mandalay dress at Eleanor Schain – it was the first one she tried on!

The party was held at Bridgeview Yacht Club with the kids cocktail hour outside due to the beautiful weather.

The young guests enjoying the outdoor space at Bridgeview Yacht Club

The adult cocktail hour featured this “Jake” ice sculpture

We have talked about this idea in the past, but the Brett’s put a new spin on it! They took Jake’s bedroom closet door off the hinges and brought it to the party. Simphonic Events arranged to have a graffiti artist decorate the door during the cocktail hour and then guests could sign-in!

The closet door before…

Guests watching the artist at work

The closet door with signatures from the party and ready to be taken home and re-hung in Jake’s room!

Stefan’s did a great job of transforming the space into an urban feel. The centerpieces set the mood and were quite unique.

Actual chains hung from the large lamp

Other tables centerpieces featured these calla lily flowers

A large JRB sign hung above the entrance to the party room

Posters of Jake, like the one below taken by Simphonic Events lined the hallway leading into the ballroom

Jake did a photo shoot at a legal graffiti park in Long Island City to get these cool blow-ups

The Brett family used Darlene Barzilay for their invitations. They selected dark chocolate brown with a light blue boarder and a striped envelope liner.

Simphonic Events arranged to have an airbrush artist customize flip-flops and hats for the young guests. They also did photo favors with personalized photo CD covers.

As young guests left the party, they were given their take-home favor. Above are the boy and girl version of the flannel pj bottoms designed and created by Jake Mandel at www.jinkel.com

EJ The DJ provided the musical entertainment with CL as the MC. Guests were on the dance floor the entire night!

Jake makes his entrance being carried in on a couch by the EJ The DJ dancers

At some point during the celebration, Jake and the dancers changed into these logo’ed T-shirts

There were many special touches used during Jake’s Bar Mitzvah celebration. Some were planned and some like the below, were spontaneous!

Mitzvah Dad Steve taking the “horah” to new heights!

Mitzvah Mom Sue came up with this great idea. To keep the “urban” feel going, as guests left their party, they could take candy from these lined garbage pails and scoop them into logo’ed candy bags

When it came to the place cards, Mitzvah Mom Sue had an idea of what she wanted. She bought supplies at Michael’s for about $30 and with the help of a friend, created her own!

Stephan’s designed the place card table to appear as if the cards were on top of grass

When it came time for the candle lighting, guests were in for a treat. Instead of a traditional cake, a large picture of the NYC skyline was unveiled. Each time a guest was honored with a “candle,” Jake would ask them to join him by reading a poem and one of the buildings would lite up the city skyline.

This large piece of lite-up artwork was created by Simphonic Events. It now hangs in Jake’s room. To learn how this was created, click here

Mitzvah Mom Sue has now successfully planned both her son’s Bar Mitzvah celebrations. She has this advice for our readers.
“I happened to love all the planning! Enjoy the process, it can be very fun. I would suggest making lists and more lists because there is so much to organize. Do something personal, I loved making the seating cards with a great friend because it felt more personal and I was proud that we were so creative. Most of all, enjoy all the family and friends who are there to celebrate with your family. That is the best feeling!”

Nicole Meyer from South Salem, New York celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in October 2009, but just went on a family trip to Israel to meet her “twin.”
Pictured left Nicole and her new friend and “twin” Liron. We spoke to her about this special trip and what it meant to her.
MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular Mitzvah Project?
NM: When my Bat Mitzvah was approaching last October, I struggled to come up with an idea for my Mitzvah Project.

After endless hours of research, I discovered AMIT. As I read about AMIT’s commitment to helping Israeli children in need, I decided that this was definitely the cause I wanted to support. I also found out about Amit’s twinning program that would allow me to be paired up with a girl in Israel, also of Bat Mitzvah age. I would get the opportunity to celebrate with my twin in Israel. I knew that this program would fulfill my goal of doing something “hands on.”
MM: How did you go about raising money for this project?
NM: Last Purim, my Mom helped me bake hamantaschen to sell at my Temple’s Purim carnival in order to raise money for the schools. I also donated 10% of my Bat Mitzvah gifts to AMIT.
MM: Who were you paired with?
NM: I soon learned that I was twinned with Liron Monsonega. Since I planned to visit Israel in the summer following my Bat Mitzvah, I would also make a visit to the Maale Adumim Elementary School in Jerusalem for a celebration with Liron.
On June 28, my family and I went to visit the school. During the drive over, I was nervous, because I didn’t speak conversational Hebrew. I had no idea how I would talk to my twin, and the other girls I would be celebrating with. As we walked towards the school, Liron, all her classmates, and their teacher were there to welcome me with hugs. It was heartwarming. In the classroom, we glazed pottery and communicated through a translator, the girls’ English teacher. I realized that we had much in common, even though we were from different countries. They seemed just like my friends at home. They were always laughing and jumping around. After pottery, the girls presented me with unexpected gifts, and Liron and I blew out the candles on a birthday cake.

Nicole, her family and the girls/teachers from Maale Adumim Elementary School
The celebration was coming to a close. The girls and I sang two Israeli songs together, and we took many pictures. Girls kept coming up to hug me, and we exchanged emails in order to keep in touch. This was an experience I will never forget, as long as I live. It made my Bat Mitzvah all the more special, and it impacted my life as well as all of the girls I became friends with that day.
We would like to thank Nicole for sharing her special Mitzvah Project with Mitzvah Market. Read about Nicole brother’s project archived on MitzvahMarket.com.

The Levy family took advantage of the long Memorial Day weekend and celebrated their son Ben’s Bar Mitzvah over the course of two days.
His service was on Saturday morning at Or-Elohim in Jericho, New York and then the party was on Sunday evening at Temple Judea in Manhasset, New York.
Ben is a soccer player so his theme was appropriately World Cup Soccer. We would like to thank the Levys for sharing their unique ideas with Mitzvah Market.
All event photography was done by Joanne Orshan for JoJo Photos. All vendor contact information is listed at the bottom. Pictured above Bar Mitzvah boy Ben Levy.

The entire family looked great. Ben’s suit was from Nordstrom’s and Caroline found her beautiful cranberry colored gown at Bloomingdale’s.

Left to right: Brother Jason, Ben, brother Casey, Mom and Dad

Ben’s handsome navy and green invitation was done by Susan Lehrhoff for Ethan Niles.

The ballroom at Temple Judea is beautiful, but United Floral did a great job of adding different types of centerpieces to each table and incorporating Ben’s soccer theme.

Mom Caroline selected grey linens that added to the warmth of the room

One of three different centerpieces designed by United Floral

A beautiful tree created a terrific centerpiece

Pictures of Ben on the soccer field taken by JoJo Photos were on every table

This table used “Italy” signage to indicate the table’s name. Other teams were used for the different tables

Mom Caroline found some great resources online that she wanted to share! She ordered the below seating cards and printed menu cards from www.theorganizedbridestore.com. She found it very easy to do all online.

They looked great all lined-up!

United Floral added these great looking floral arrangements to the table with the placecards

These “BarMintsVahs” were placed at each guests seat. She ordered these from www.cool-party-favors.com

To keep the young guests busy during the cocktail hour, Creative Games brought in 4 foozball tables and created a “world cup” type of foosball competition!

JoJo Photos created this blow-up from an outdoor photo session which served as Ben’s sign-in board for all his guests.

In keeping with the theme, Ben gave sweatshirts to the young guests that were created by And That.

Design on the back of the zip-up sweatshirts

Young guests could also have these T-shirt pillows made at the party, courtesy of Creative Games

Starlight Express provided the music entertainment for all of Ben’s guests. Kayo was the MC.

Ben “makes his entrance” with two of the Starlight Express dancers

After each guest came up to light their candle during the traditional candle lighting ceremony, Ben handed them a travel candle that Mom Caroline found online at www.Beau-coup.com.

Mitzvah Mom Caroline has now successfully planned one of her three children’s Bar Mitzvahs – she’s now one of our experts! We asked her for some Mom-to-Mom advice and this is what she had to say, “Remember that the service is the focal point of the experience. Not only does this keep your heart in the right place, but it takes some of the stress off of the planning. As for the celebration, don’t second-guess your choices. If you like your selections for decor and entertainment, so will your guests. Then on the night of the party, relax and enjoy all of your hard work!”

At school, Ben, together with his community service class, organized and collected hundreds of new and gently used books to donate to children battling cancer and blood disorders at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, the hospital where his Dad works.

Ben also created two baskets of art supplies, books and video games which sat on the bimah during his Mitzvah service and then were donated to the patients at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. Ben felt strongly that while he can play soccer and basketball whenever he wants, he wanted to make the time that the children spend at the hospital more pleasant by giving them art supplies to create projects, video games to play and books to read.

Here is a list of the vendors who made Ben’s Bar Mitzvah special. If you call any of them, please make sure to say you read about their services on MitzvahMarket.com.

The Pastolove Family celebrated their daughter Haley’s Bat Mitzvah at Temple Chaverim in Plainview, New York. Selecting a theme came very easy for them due to their daughter’s first name. Check out all their great ideas for “Haley’s Comet” below. We thank them for sharing their special day with Mitzvah Market.
L-R The Pastolove Family: Mom Debra, Bat Mitzvah girl Haley, Dad Howard and sister Ilyssa.
All party photography was done by The Ira Rosen Studio.

The entire family looked great. Both Haley’s Temple suit and navy gown was from Outrageous Boutique. Mitzvah Mom Debra had her dress custom made by Gregory Cicola and sister Ilyssa’s red dress was from The Bridal Suite in Centereach.

Haley’s Temple suit was a dress and jacket and her gown had a big tulle skirt!

The ballroom at Temple Chaverim looks different for every party. In this case, Stefan’s transformed the room using turquoise and other bright colors.

The ballroom is ready for guests

Guests enjoying the music!

Ellen Futterman from Proper Notice designed Haley’s invitation which was mounted on dark blue glitter paper and featured a bow with sparkle across the top.

In keeping with Haley’s theme, Hasson caterers created the perfect delicious cake.

Haley wanted something special for dessert and something different from her sister Ilyssa’s party a few years ago. Hasson Caterers came up with a cupcake dessert bar which she loved!

Haley’s favor was a bright blue snuggie with her Haley Comet logo designed by Mitzvah Mom Debra’s company Bayard Advertising.

One of Haley’s friends models the favor

Mitzvah Mom Debra found these light-up “star” necklaces and thought they would make perfect place cards in keeping with her theme.

Each one had a tag attached with the guests name and table number. They looked very cool all lit up and ready for guests

Mitzvah Mom Debra has now successfully planned both of her daughter’s Bat Mitzvahs. She found a great way to keep track of her guests.
“As I received my RSVP’s, I took index cards and wrote their names in the corner and the tally of yes responses. Not only did I always have my total handy, but when it came time to do the table setting, the index cards came in handy!”
Thanks Debra! A great idea.

We always welcome the challenge when asked to create something innovative for candle lighting. More and more families are growing tired of the traditional candle lighting ceremony, feeling that it wastes time and bores guests.
When the Brett family came to me looking for something new and different to fit in with their son Jake’s urban graffiti theme, the wheels started turning immediately. Having already done a photo shoot in the city with Jake, I could see his affinity for the city and graffiti artwork and wanted to create something that would put a new spin on his candle lighting and would be a great keepsake for years to come.
In keeping with the urban theme I decided to enlarge a black and white image of the New York City skyline. I would then outline each of the 13 buildings with miniature white lights allowing Jake to illuminate each building individually, corresponding with his 13 candles. The 14th good luck candle would be illustrated by constellations in the sky and colored lights atop each building.

The image was printed (3ft by 6ft) on glossy photo paper and mounted on 1/2 inch foam board. The foam board would keep the printed image rigid and would help to secure the lights in place. We decided to use white holiday lights to illuminate the buildings. Finding these lights mid spring proved to be a challenge as the item is typically only sold during the holidays.
We began by poking small holes around the perimeter of each building. The foam board turned out to be the perfect thickness to hold the lights in place allowing only the glass tip of the light to poke through. We then carefully embedded the lights from behind the image using a separate strand of lights for each building. This would allow us to put each building on a different switch so they could be lit one at a time.
Many hours, rolls of tape, and strands of lights later, we had completed the minefield of wires and were ready to power it up. We custom ordered rack mountable power strips that would provide a switch for each outlet. The wired image was place in a custom wood frame with a 2″ deep molding that would allow us to cleanly affix the wiring to the inside of the frame.
Once the piece was wired we began flipping switches and were amazed that the outcome was actually cooler than we had imagined. Each building would light up in sequence, and the last candle adorned each building with a colored beacon and illuminated stars above the skyline. We couldn’t wait for the party to come so we could surprise Jake and his friends and family.
Jake’s party was a blast and I was deeply proud to see the skyline shining bright over the dance floor. We hope this inspires you to think outside of the box and come up with your own creative candle lighting.

If you are lucky enough to have a beautiful backyard setting, you might want to consider having your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration right at home!
We found some great pictures from a backyard Luau on Party411.com.

Fingers crossed the weather holds out, but tents can help!

This lucky Bat Mitzvah girl has a beautiful backyard and it looks like they had beautiful weather! As guests arrived they were greeted by models dressed in hula gear passing out leis

Check out the lifesize caricature of the Bat Mitzvah girl (created by Party411.com) at the tent entrance. There were also caricature cutouts of assorted jungle animals in luau gear!

Tiki lamps lined the entrance to the tented area

We love the brightly colored table linens and raffia flower table skirts on all the buffets and even at the top of the tent!

Mitzvah Market is a big fan of balloons! Here you can see how bright tropical color balloons with luau theme mylars made for fabulous centerpieces on the tables in the tent

Monkeys, along with themed signage hung from the tent
Thank you to Party411.com for sharing this terrific idea with Mitzvah Market. To see some of their luau accessories, click here.

Spencer Weinstein is from Syosset, New York and celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in June of 2010. He decided on his wonderful Mitzvah Project after his Dad, Rabbi Jay Weinstein of Congregation Simchat HaLev told him about Robbie Levine, a 9 year old boy from Merrick, New York who died on a baseball field and might have been saved had an AED (automatic external defibrillator) was there.
Rabbi Jay asked us to share his son’s Mitzvah Project with our Mitzvah Market readers, so we asked Spencer a few questions about his project and here’s what he had to say in his own words:
MM: Can you give us details about your Mitzvah Project?
SW: I have purchased, from the gifts I received from my Bar Mitzvah, an AED, automatic external defibrillator for my synagogue (Simchat HaLev). The AED hopefully will never be used, but if needed, it could save a life and by donating this, if it saves a life, it will be as if I helped save the world.

MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular project?
SW: My Dad showed me an article and told me a story about an oral surgeon named Dr. Craig Levine, who saved his friend’s life at a Bar Mitzvah this past January. This doctor’s 9 year old son died on a baseball field in Merrick, New York in 2005. The field didn’t have an AED and by the time police arrived with one it was too late.
As a result of his son’s death, Dr. Levine and his family started a foundation called Forever 9: The Robbie Levine Foundation which provides youth sports leagues with AED’s.

Robbie Levine
I thought about it and realized that although Congregation Simchet HaLev is not a youth league it is an awesome Synagogue and Hebrew school. There are always kids, adults and families here and I would like to help protect them.
We think Spencer’s project is terrific and one that is easy for anyone to accomplish. To learn more about the Levine family and their foundation, click here.

Mikayla Rubenstein celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on May 15, 2010 at Atlantis Banquet & Events after a service and kiddush at the Dix Hills Jewish Center. This venue was the perfect setting for her theme, Mikayla’s Fanta-Sea.
Mitzvah Mom Suzy did almost everything herself and found amazing vendors who thought “outside the box” to create a dream party for her daughter. We thank them for sharing their creative ideas with Mitzvah Market. All Vendor information is at the bottom of this spotlight.
Starlight Express provided the photography.

The entire Family looked great. Both Mikayla and Mom Suzy found their dresses at It’s Simply For You.

Mitzvah Mom Suzy with Bat Mitzvah girl Mikayla

Mikayla is lucky to have such a large family! Here she is with (L-R Step-Dad Todd, Mom Suzy, brother Shay, Dad David, and Step-Mom Jana.

The entire family during the candle lighting ceremony!

Mitzvah Mom Suzy found a great invitation company online called, Message In A Bottle and took their concept and added her own colors, tissue, packing crinkle, labels and zazzle stamp. She reports that they did a flawless job assembling, mailing and tracking priority mail 225 invitations.

Invitations from Messageinabottle.com

Mikayla got very lucky with the weather and was able to take advantage of having her cocktail hour outside Atlantis Banquet & Events which Mom thinks made the whole night!

Guests at the cocktail hour

The weather was perfect for the outdoors!

Chairs were rented from Party Rental LTD in Bridgehampton and the table clothes and napkins were rented from Table Wraps in Jericho

The centerpieces on the adult tables were traditional florals in glass vases filled with shells and LED Lighting. Suzy can not say enough great things about Jamie Charlton and her crew from Artistry in Flowers. Although Suzy tried to do most of the work herself, she felt that Jamie acted as her party planner and she was able to bounce all her ideas off her. Jamie also did the floral arrangements in the cocktail hour, on the serving trays, place card table and candle lighting

The kids tables were upstairs around the shark tank, so Suzy did not feel she needed to do much. The centerpieces on their tables were metal “fish” sculptures that she ordered from her own website www.cheapchicdecor.com

To keep the theme going, Hi-Tech Party Productions created clever “shell” table numbers out of foam board

Atlantis Marine World has amazing built-in decor but Suzy did want personal touches of pictures of Mikayla around the room so Hi-Tech Party Productions created 3 large blow-ups, like the one above and below

Hi-Tech Party Productions also created this coming attraction poster for younger brother Shay!

Starlight Express with MC Koko provided the musical entertainment for the party.

Mikayla makes her entrance!

Atlantis Marine World provided the spectacular cake for Mikayla’s celebration.

Cake and candles await the traditional candle lighting ceremony

Atlantis Marine World has a built-in gameroom which Suzy used for the kids during the cocktail hour.

Mikayla at her candy bar which was right next to the ice cream sundae bar!

Mikayla’s sign-in book was also done by Hi-Tech Photography Events.

Mitzvah Mom Suzy did many special touches on her own. We love all her DIY ideas! She told us that after seeing the cost for a GOBO, she created her own “Mikayla” gobo. We also have her other ideas below!

She purchased the projector for $169.00 from www.goboman.com

Suzy made her own place cards using the image from the zazzle stamp and shell place card holders that she ordered from favorfavor.com

Susy designed the “Mikayla’s Fanta-Sea” logo herself and then used a local artist and screen printer to execute the sweatshirts, water bottles, chocolate chip cookie bags and labels for the gift bags

Probably nothing that hasn’t been said before! Do as much in advance as possible…I was still doing things on Thursday night! At the party….don’t sweat the small stuff. I had a hard time subscribing to that philosophy and regretted it! Challenge your vendors on price and creativity. Make sure you are getting exactly what you want….don’t settle!

Mikayla’s charity is breast cancer awareness and the next walk she will do is the Avon Walk in the Fall in NYC.

We loved the colors this family used for their daughter’s B’nai Mitzvah. The party was held at The Woodland At The Greens in Melville, New York and they used Parties by Pat James.

We hope these beautiful photos will inspire you for your own child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration. Check out the below:

This is a very creative way to present your guests with their place cards. Parties by Pat James hung these long pink boas off the existing chandelier. You can see each place card hanging off the bottom!

Guests could easily see where they were sitting

The Woodlands ballroom looked bright and colorful! Pink lacquered chairs were used with hot pink table clothes and lime green dinnerware

Vases at different heights filled with beautiful flowers served as centerpieces

Up close you can see all the details: polka-dot tablecloth and orange seat cushions

The kids lounge area with hot pink couches and orange end tables tied in nicely!

A cupcake tower was used as the B’nai Mitzvah cake. What a great idea!
