The Schuster Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight
July 27th, 2011

The Schuster Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

Sarah Schuster celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on June 4, 2011 with a service at Temple Beth David in Commack, New York followed by a party at Temple Chaverim in Plainview, New York.

She absolutely loves fashion and everything coordinated with this theme, from her magazine-style sign-in book and the fashion inspired centerpieces to the shopping bag cake.

All party photography below was done by DanceJock Productions. The rest of the vendor information is listed at the bottom of this spotlight.

Featured above (L-R): Dad David, Bat Mitzvah girl Sarah, younger brother Evan and Mom Robin.

Stamp - Mitzvah Decor

Lighter Than Air worked closely with Mom Robin on the decor. She tells us she wanted to use wire forms as part of the centerpieces and found wire shoes, pocketbooks and a mannequin form online. She decorated them herself with silk flowers, ribbons and rhinestones! She went on to explain that Arthur from Lighter Than Air was great to work with and incorporated some of the forms into very cool, large glass vases.

DanceJock Productions supplied two unique “shoe” chairs which the kids lounged on during the party

Stamp - Mitzvah Music

DanceJock Productions provided the musical entertainment for Sarah’s celebration with George as the MC. Mom Robin says he was the perfect blend of fun for the kids and adults without being too overwhelming at the party.

The sign-in book was designed by Mom Robin with some help from a friend who was able to photo shop images together.  She used the Website Blurb.com and although it was time consuming, she says if you’re computer savvy (or have friends who are) it’s worth it and is also very cost effective. See some of the pages below which alternated with color coordinated blank pages where guests could sign-in:

Mitzvah Mom Robin has this advice for our readers, “My best advice is to stay organized and above all else, try to stay sane. You’ve likely spent lots of time meeting with numerous vendors and believe you’ve chosen the best DJ/photographer/caterer for your affair, right? Don’t be afraid to ask for their advice and don’t get crazy if something doesn’t go exactly as planned because you’re the only one who will know! Everyone else will just see a beautiful family and an awesome party. We had the celebration my daughter was dreaming of!”

Stamp - Mitzvah Project Idea

Sarah turned her love of fashion into a successful clothing drive. She collected roughly 50 bags of clothing for the Nachlas Maharim Clothing Drive. This organization has been collecting and distributing clothing for Jewish families in need for over 20 years. Contact Shelley at 631-225-7915 to donate.

“Adamcrombie” Themed Bar Mitzvah
July 20th, 2011

“Adamcrombie” Themed Bar Mitzvah

Adam Farber celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in April of 2010 at Warehouse 5 in Island Park, New York. Mom Michelle is the owner of M. Studio Events and planned every detail for their “Adamcrombie” theme. She is known for branding and we are excited to show you all her very clever ideas.

All photography is by Kornfeld Studios and the rest of the vendor information is listed at the bottom.

Pictured above L-R: Older sister Sammi, Dad Scott, Bar Mitzvah boy Adam and Mom Michelle

Michelle created the “Adamcrombie” theme, and wanted her concept to tell a story and tie together all the details. Her idea started with the invitation below and came to life at their celebration when guests watched their entrance video created by Ethan from Kornfeld Studios.

Adam Farber entrance video

Take a look at their creative entrance video here

In the video, Adam arrives at the Abercrombie offices and meets with an executive, (played by his grandfather). He explains that he has a great idea to get their company on its feet again. Skeptically, the owner listens and says, “Kid, I will give you until April 10th to get this business going.” The video shows Adam working very hard to turn things around. This all made sense to their guests who arrived at their celebration to find the venue set up as a store. It was complete with friends and family discount cards, clothing hanging on racks and all the other details you will see below.

Michelle told us, “What I was truly trying to accomplish first and foremost, was to celebrate our son’s Bar Mitzvah in a way that he would love, but I also wanted to showcase my talents in launching my event planning business.”

Michelle wanted to re-create an Abercrombie store experience and her attention to detail began with their invitation. Take a look below:

Guests received the box above which contained the invitation and a T-shirt. They probably thought they were receiving something they ordered from an Abercrombie store!

Adam Farber - Poppy

Adam’s Bar Mitzvah service took place at home. There was a very special moment during the service when Adam and his grandfather “Poppy” were Bar Mitzvah’d together!

Mitzvah Advice from Michelle

“Organization, creativity and working with amazing people will get you to your end result. That is why my business has evolved into more of a “party” concierge service, rather than event planning. I can offer just one or two of the elements that you see in Adam’s party, or work with a client to organize the entire event. My main objective is for my client (who ultimately becomes a friend) to be a guest at their own party. I love dotting every “I’ and crossing every “T.” It makes me happy to see the end result, but I LOVE the process!”

Eat Pray Save: The Trials & Tribulations Of A Mitzvah Mom – Part 9
July 10th, 2011

Eat Pray Save: The Trials & Tribulations Of A Mitzvah Mom – Part 9

By Cindy Silvert, www.easybreezygourmet.com

My dear reader, we did it! We laughed, we cried, we “saved” money, we Bar Mitzvahed. My son’s long anticipated special day has come and gone. So how did I do? (Enough about him!) Did I fight the good fight? Did I stick to my guns? Did I go rogue or buckle? Here’s how I rate myself: Hypocrite? Check. Over Budget? Check. Obsessive? Check. Sleeping Pills? Check. Check. Check. Lists of lists that begat yet more lists? Check. Very Happy Bar Mitzvah Boy and Guests? Check Plus. Thrilled with how it turned out? Yup.

While certain things didn’t work out exactly as anticipated (ie. the budget), the focus and tone of the day were on the mark. My son arrived neither by helicopter nor camel, in fact, I’m not even sure how he got home. The Bar Mitzvah was low on fanfare, high on Simcha and good clean fun.

Here’s what happened in the home stretch: Seventy two hours before the big day, this ex-florist was out of the country wondering whether she’d bother with centerpieces. (The ones in her head were just perfect, so why mess with it?) I’d like to think that if I hadn’t had centerpieces, I’d have made quite a statement, who knows, maybe saved the world. And while I’d like to think that statement might have been: “Centerpieces suck!” or “I guess my mother-in-law ate the centerpieces, again!” there would no doubt have been those who would have interpreted that statement as: “By golly she’s cheap!” or “Huh?” or “Where the hell is the center of the table?” In the end, I decided that if I were to find something on the way home from the airport, so be it. If not, so be it. Clever, I know. Either way, I’d write some nonsense about it. So we’re good.

Things I get an A+ on:

1. Choosing an incredible location, caterer and band.
2. Going low key/low budget on centerpieces.
3. Not knowing the tablecloth color nor losing sleep over it. (*refill Ativan)
4. Refusing to print invites for family or friends.
5. Hiring a doll of a caterer to plan and execute the family BBQ.
6. Doing my own make up. (I write this prior to picture viewing)
7. Not delivering a speech.

Things I was just lucky to have:

1. Rabbis who let us do things just how we wanted.
2. A son who did his job.
3. Dream weather.
4. Professionals all round.
5. A husband. Need I say more?
6. Marvelous friends.

Things I hope to obsess less about next time:

1. The schedule. Kids will be kids regardless of what this old lady plans. In the end, I hired a bunch of counselors and told them to do whatever they wanted. I’d rather not discuss the number of times I reordered the activities prior to this life affirming decision. Ever. The kids had a blast.

2. The hotel baskets. This one wasn’t my fault. I asked both my husband and trusted “BFF” (yes, it’s in quotations for a reason) whether I ought to include home baked Mandelbroit, assuming they would call me insane and save me from myself. Both failed me.

3. Giveaways. I know. I ranted against these in a most earnest fashion. Even I believed I meant it, but in the end, I knew my son would be embarrassed without them. So while we didn’t give away sweats or even shorts, our modestly priced, cleverly designed door prizes were well received. The things we do for love…

Things I didn’t need but was glad to have:

1. A live band.

2. Four counselors –you never know.

3. A backup plan in case of rain. As if…

4. Enough water and ice cream to sustain a small nation, for a millennium, perhaps two.

5. First aid supplies, suntan lotion, towels and citronella.

6. Extra art supplies, in case of bad weather or bored kids.

7. We put a whole lot of elbow grease into fixing up the house for the big day, and it looks darn tootin’. Still, I can’t help but wonder why it wasn’t me who got the face lift.

Things I hope I don’t do again next time:

1. Buckle into printing an invite for kids. I ended up having to print these on my own (don’t ask), so they didn’t cost much, but that’s beside the point. I expect there will be some cool technology next time around that will render invitations obsolete. Hopefully someone will tell me about it.

2. Hide the suntan lotion & towels.

3. Give my siblings important jobs. (Talk about not getting an A+)

4. Tattoo the To Do list on my forehead.

5. Deliver a child who will be Bar Mitzvahed shortly after two Jewish Holidays and much travel.

6. Buy six back-up outfits for my daughter (Stop snickering, I only kept one for myself.)

7. Abandon my painting and writing during planning phases 16A through 437G.

8. Fail to plug my painting and writing (incessantly) while blogging.

What now? Happily, I shall resume my painting and writing. Yes, I paint and write! More details you say? As you surely intuited, I am working on a Cookbook/Harlequin romance titled: Classy Eating/Trashy Reading (Who isn’t?) It claims to be funny and is full of easy-to-make, money-back-guaranteed recipes. It will be published before the end of the year, or my name is mud. Check out easybreezygourmet.com for updates and secret sauces. Wherefore my art?  Go to artcindy.com to see what I’m painting and where I’m exhibiting (and if my website exists.) Send comments so I know you’re still there. Wishing you the best summer ever & thanks for sharing (oh right, that was me).

Til next time,

Cindy

The Halperin Bar Mitzvah Family Spotlight: From Hospital Bed To Horah Chair
July 6th, 2011

The Halperin Bar Mitzvah Family Spotlight: From Hospital Bed To Horah Chair

On April 30, 2011 the Halperin family held their son Benjamin’s Bar Mitzvah service at B’nai Israel Congregation in Rockville, Maryland. Hours later his celebration continued at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Although this sounds very much like the start of all our Mitzvah Family Spotlight stories, it is like no other we have reported on before.

We were hanging on every word Mitzvah Mom Judi told us about what happened hours prior to her son Ben’s Bar Mitzvah service. Please continue reading to learn more…

Pictured L-R: Sister Meredith, Dad Ken, Mom Judi and Bar Mitzvah boy Benjamin.

Stamp - Oy Vey

Imagine this: You are expecting 70 guests who have traveled from out of town for a Friday night Oneg dinner and a full weekend of activities, then the unexpected happens. Here is what Mom Judi told us:

“At 5pm Friday night, my son Ben had an emergency appendectomy. He was released from the hospital at 7am, went home, showered, and then off to shul where he was flawless…speech and everything! He made it to his party, even his wonderful surgeon, Dr. Marmom came to offer his support. Although he couldn’t dance much, he still had a blast.” She goes on to explain, “All 170 guests at the Bar Mitzvah were in awe! If you can imagine (in a conservative shul) when the Rabbi introduced Ben to give his speech, all 500 congregants and guests clapped – it was really a moment. Although much of the weekend was a blur due to Ben’s appendectomy, he has received so much praise for how he handled this situation. His poise on the bimah, can-do attitude and sense of humor. We are so proud of his accomplishment. As a friend put it…’It was a humbling experience for our family, friends and the congregation to witness his grit and performance first hand.'”

We had to share some pictures from this courageous Bar Mitzvah boy’s celebration!

This celebration didn’t have any particular theme, but the party was based on Ben and his favorite color blue.

Perfect Party created two logos for Ben’s celebration that were used in different ways.

Halperin
Ben loves Root Beer! So the above Root Beer logo was on the shirts and on cups. For dessert, the kids were given a cup with the logo that had vanilla ice cream and an individual can of Barq’s Root Beer. This logo was also on a sticker for the kids shirt bags and on the menu cards and table numbers for the kids

The adult table numbers and menus featured the above logo, Ben 4.30.11 and was also used as a gobo on the wall

Stamp - Mitzvah Idea

We love this idea! Mom Judi purchased a tallis bag and materials and had family members each take a turn with a few stitches (or more). Aunts, cousins (1st, 2nd and 3rd), Ben’s Nana, a few friends as well as Ken, Meredith and Ben himself! Judi did 95% of the bag and then had it finished with a very special message from her which was embroidered on the inside. She included a note on the inside with the names of everyone who participated.

Halperin

Stamp - Mitzvah Project Idea

For Ben’s Mitzvah Project, he decided to support the Edeyo Foundation, a non-profit organization that built a school in Haiti prior to the earthquake, but is now in rebuilding mode.  He has raised over $2500 for Edeyo and sent 10 large boxes of school supplies and backpacks to them. He did this by holding a supply drive at his sister Meredith’s Elementary School over the winter break. Last summer, they honored Benjamin at their 3rd anniversary party for his efforts as a young boy who wanted to make a difference. Ben was picked up from sleepaway camp for a 24 hour period of time so he could be driven to NYC for the event. He was presented his humanitarian award by actress Michele Rodriguez.

The Frying Dutchman
June 29th, 2011

The Frying Dutchman

Are you looking for a fun alternative treat for your guests as they leave your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah or any type of party?

The Frying Dutchmen hit the streets in May 2011 when Ben Goldberg, 23 and Jacob Davenport, 20 decided they didn’t want to work in Corporate America. They now bring delicious French Fries to you in their gourmet kitchen on wheels.

Their all-natural menu offers both sweet potato and Belgian-style French Fries accompanied by a selection of creative and wacky dipping sauces. You pick the fries, the size and then the sauce. No matter what you prefer, whether it is spicy, sweet, tangy, or robust, there is a sauce for everyone.

Their menu is constantly changing and all of their sauces and fries are made from scratch of the highest quality, all natural ingredients. They even have sauce options if you have a food allergy.

The Frying Dutchman truck

All of their sauces are made by “Top Chef” contestant Dave Martin and they all have creative names. Check out a few of our favorites:

Locked n’ Loaded – Sour Cream, Applewood Smoked Bacon & Sharp New York Cheddar Cheese
Guacahummus – Guacomole + Hummus = Amazing
Truffle Shuffle – White Turffle & Parmesan Cream
The Big Apple Butter – Cinnamon Maple Butter

Mitzvah Project: The Bali Children’s Project
June 26th, 2011

Mitzvah Project: The Bali Children’s Project

Julia Lisi celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in 2009 and did a terrific Mitzvah Project which benefited The Bali Children’s Project.

We think this idea can be duplicated by any child across the country and asked her some questions to get more details on what she did.

Please continue reading:

MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular project?
JL:
I had heard about the great work The Bali Children’s Project and Linda Venter were doing with Balinese children, and that they had begun a knitting and sewing club to help make the young women more self-sufficient by giving them a commercial skill. I also knit so I thought it would be a good connection.

MM: Can you give us details of your Mitzvah Project.
JL:
My friend and I posted flyers and sent emails to everyone we knew – especially our classmates at Temple – and asked for everyone’s leftover yarn, knitting patterns, and other supplies and we had a drop box in our Temples to collect it. Then we held a bake sale at school and raised money. We gave the yarn, patterns, supplies and money to Linda Venter. She bought more knitting supplies with the money.

We were very lucky that one mother of a kid at Temple once had a yarn store and didn’t know what to do with the leftover yarn once the store closed. She was so happy to know it would go to a good cause. We found that everyone had yarn left over from various projects they had made.

The Balinese children with their donated knitting supplies

MM: Did your project have a start and end date?:
JL:
The project was begun in the fall of 2008 and was completed by my Bat Mitzvah date (3/21/09).

MM: In your own words, what does it mean to you to do a Mitzvah Project for your Bat Mitzvah?
JL:
I was really proud that I was able to collect as much yarn and knitting patterns and supplies as I did, as well as raising some money through a bake sale. It made me feel like I could make a difference. Later, Linda sent me a photo of the women knitting and told me how important my contribution was so I really felt a part of things and understood what my project meant.

Mitzvah Project: Bali Children's Project

MM: How did you go about actually collecting the knitting supplies?
JL:
We sent out emails to everyone we knew and asked the class parents at our Temple to send an email to every classmate. We had days where the drop box at the Temple was set up so that people knew when they could drop off their old yarn. The collection part of the project lasted about 3 or 4 months.

We would like to thank Julia for sharing her project with Mitzvah Market!
