Just like so many families around the country, we could not have the celebration that was originally planned for our son Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah. We had anticipated having a party in NYC for all of his friends at an indoor venue. Throughout the year, we kept hoping that the world would get better. Once we realized that the party we had planned was not a safe option, we pivoted to celebrating with just our family. We had hoped to be in our synagogue for the service but even that was not viable. As being outdoors provided the safest way to celebrate, we began searching for venues. Living in NYC made this challenging. Luckily, Matthew’s grandparents have a deck and backyard that would work for what we had in mind. For the service, our wonderful Rabbi came to the house. We had the outdoor service on the deck with 16 family members – all vaccinated. It was also broadcast over Zoom for the rest of our family and friends. After the service we made our way down to the driveway where there was a tent waiting for us. EK Event Group created an unbelievable party for us with an MC leading us on the dance floor and an amazing DJ playing music. EK also created the decor and arranged to have a pizza truck come. After the party ended, Matthew said, “This was the best day of my life!” What more can my family ask for than that!

During this difficult time, embrace family and all those who will really make the day special. Many of us planned to have larger parties or indoor events. By being flexible and focusing on what is really important, the day truly becomes that much more meaningful.
