The Singer Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Singer family of Tenafly, New Jersey, celebrated daughter Billie’s Bat Mitzvah on October 12, 2013, at Lubavitch on the Palisades in Tenafly, New Jersey and reception at the 201 Club, an event venue in Englewood, New Jersey.

Billie is a huge music fan and has been playing the guitar since she was 9 years old. She wanted her Bat Mitzvah to reflect her love of playing and listening to rock ‘n’ roll music, so the party was set up to feel like a Rock concert.

Pictured L-R: Mom Dena, Bat Mitzvah girl Billie, Little sister Goldie and Dad Garrett.

The photographer was Jesse Hernandez and the rest of the vendor information is at the end of the spotlight.

It was clear when guests received Billie’s invitation that they were invited to a Rock ‘n’ Roll party. The custom design by LetterBoxInk by Laura Nehls was a beautifully wrapped record album with all the party details.

The RSVP card was designed to mimic a concert ticket stub and guests especially enjoyed the song request card

Billie’s mom and dad created the “Rock On” hand logo in the Led Zeppelin font.

It was displayed on multiple TV and movie screens and shown throughout the evening

This is a creative family and mom and dad own an architecture and design firm, Garrett Singer Architecture & Design, so they couldn’t wait to use their talents and resources for their daughter’s party. Most of the decor and favors were designed by them. The dark red lounge environment of the 201 Club was the perfect venue to recreate a rock hangout.

The seating areas were decorated with custom pillows made from vintage concert T-shirts created by mom Dena

Different colors added to the concert vibe

Balloons filled the ceiling adding to the festivities and Billie’s name displayed on screens made for a great party atmosphere

Guitars for Parties created the card box made to look like an amplifier

To create a rocker vibe, the room was decorated with glowing red vases and red mercury glass candles

Guitars for Parties created the sign-in which had a big glittered heart and two solid black guitars that could be signed with silver markers.

Kids and adults rocked out all night with MC AG and his crew from Geo Events. Current hits, old-school rock and hip hop from Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Run DMC, got everyone on the dance floor.

Billie enjoyed the Horah in her high-tops

MC AG had the crowd going all night long

There was non-stop dancing for both kids and parents

Billie’s friends took a quick time-out from dancing for a photo op

Billie started off the night in beautiful silver heels, but quickly changed into red Converse sneakers. She gave her friends Converse-style socks to do the same

In addition to a fun photo booth with props, they had a tattoo artist who had made stencils of Billie’s logo and used it as a tattoo option.

Stamp_cake

Billie’s red velvet cake and cupcake tower from Miller’s Bakeshop perfectly reflected the rock ‘n’ roll theme.

 Singer Cupcakes

Complete with a red guitar cake topper and rock star cupcakes

Love the cake topper!

Distressed vintage style concert t-shirts were given out at the end of the night. Girls got gray and black raglans and boys received black tees.

Each bag had Billie’s custom logo

The front of the girls (left) and the boys (right)

The back, “NJ Tour 2013”

Billie started her own foundation called “Look Good, Feel Good.” She was able to raise $2500 to make bags filled with lip gloss, fuzzy socks, hand lotions, nail stickers to give out to teenage girls in the hospital. Her hope was that if the girls could spend some time making themselves feel good by acting like regular teenage girls, it would lift their spirits and help them feel better too. She dropped off about 100 bags to Tomorrows Children’s Fund at Hackensack Hospital and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, New York.

Billie packed up everything she collected

 Some advice from Mom Dena:
“Having the right feel to your party makes a huge impact! Whether its use of color, décor, themes, etc. there are so many cool (many simple and inexpensive!) ideas out there that can set your event apart from the pack. I recommend doing a lot of online research, which really helped us formulate our design direction for the party- from the invitations to the cake to the logo. Once we picked our theme, we spent a lot of time looking on Google, Pinterest, Etsy, etc to see what unique and fresh ideas we could come up with based on our rock and roll concept. If you want to do something that will make a lasting impression, finding the right inspiration and ideas are everything!!

The Alexis Goldstein Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Goldstein family from Katonah, New York, celebrated their daughter Alexis’ Bat Mitzvah on November 30, 2013, at Temple Beth Am in Yorktown Heights, New York. A reception immediately followed at Brynwood Country Club in Armonk, New York.

Since Alexis dances 4-5 times a week, a dance theme was the obvious choice. This theme was cleverly used on the party elements including the creative centerpiece idea from Mom Sherrie.

Pictured L-R: Dad Steve, Brother Mikey, Bat Mitzvah girl Alexis and Mom Sherrie.

The photographer was Liz Hartzman of Liz Photo and the rest of the vendor information is listed at the end of the spotlight.

“You probably won’t accomplish everything you want for the big day. It won’t be the big things—it will be the small things (i.e. ordering extra balloons, the flavor of the cake, the shoes you’ll wear, etc.) You will simply run out of time and it will be ok. The big and important stuff will get done and everything will just fall into place.”

Mitzvah Project: Flip For A Cure
May 28th, 2014

Mitzvah Project: Flip For A Cure

We are excited to share a great Mitzvah Project from Morgan Rubin and the Rubin family from South Florida who honored a dear friend, Molli Serrano, who passed away from Pancreatic Cancer.

When Morgan received her Bat Mitzvah date she knew that she would also be responsible for an official “Mitzvah Project.” Both Morgan’s and Molli’s love for being active was a natural springboard for her Mitzvah Project!

Morgan is an avid gymnast and wanted to honor her family friend so “Flip for a Cure” was born.

MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular project?
MR:
When a very good friend of our family, Molli Serrano, was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer she was just 38 years old, a married mother of twins and was in amazing physical shape. She had completed several Ironman Triathlons (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run) and was in training for another. Molli’s diagnosis came as a complete shock to all who knew her. From that moment on our family rallied around Molli and became extremely interested in Pancreatic Cancer. What we learned about Pancreatic Cancer was truly astonishing:

  • Pancreatic cancer is one of the few cancers for which survival has not improved substantially over nearly 40 years.
  • Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States.
  • Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. 94% of pancreatic cancer patients will die within five years of diagnosis only 6% will survive more than five years. 74% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis.
  • The average life expectancy after diagnosis with metastatic disease is just three to six months.

Molli was determined to fight this horrible disease and did so for 25 months. She was considered “lucky” to be able to fight that long. Unfortunately, she passed away on July 15, 2013, just 1 month after her 40th Birthday. Molli was a real life super-hero!

MM: Can you give us details of your Mitzvah Project?
MR: During the time Molli was battling her illness we performed many “mini-mitzvahs. We made dinner for her family, visited often, participated in several Pancreatic Cancer walks, runs and bike rides. We wore purple (the color of Pancreatic Cancer) often and always keep Molli and her family in close contact. We never really considered them “mitzvahs,” they were just what we did to help out a friend and family in need.

We contacted Park Avenue Gymnastics in Cooper City, Florida, and they graciously donated two hours of “Open Gym” plus all the staff for our event. We decided to charge $10 per participant to come into the gym and take advantage of all Park Avenue had to offer. There were trampolines, tumble tracks, ball pits, mats, bars, spring floor and all sorts of active fun.

DSC01164
Morgan and her friend ready to check-in the participants

MM: How did you spread the word?
MR:
We advertised our event everywhere! We posted it on Facebook, put up flyers at the Temple, contacted our friends and sent many emails. Our goal was to have 50 kids. We also asked many local businesses to make donations. We were very lucky to receive many food items such as purple and white cookies, purple iced donuts, ice cream, chips and salsa, water, juice, trail mix and many more fun snacks! We even had one vendor donate purple ribbon glitter tattoos and an attendant to put them on during the event.  We received incredible support from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan) that provided us with PanCan tablecloths, purple ribbons, purple bracelets and tablecloths for our event.

 Flip For a Cure

We had some fun purple items such as sunglasses, bubbles, mustaches, necklaces and lots of other purple items to help “paint the gym purple”

jpeg-morgan

MM: Anything else we need to know about your Mitzvah Project?
MR:
Our event was held on Saturday, May 3rd. It was absolutely amazing! We had about 100 children from ages 8 months to 13 years old participate. We also had over 100 adults come and support the event. We raised $3,100 for Pancreatic Cancer to advance research, support patients and create hope. While our friend Molli was not there in person, we knew she was there in spirit. Her children and family participated in our event as well. Long after my Bat Mitzvah has passed, we will continue the fight against Pancreatic Cancer and will forever be proud members of Team Molli.

Mitzvah Inspire: Creative Table Numbers

Although a table number might seem like a small detail when planning a Bar Bat Mitzvah celebration, there are many creative ways to wow your guests and give your tables personality!

As you will see below, families have come up with creative ways to let guests know where to sit. No longer do you have to settle for a framed number!

Check out the way these table numbers are designed around Bar Bat Mitzvah themes:

For a Golf inspired theme, The Event of a Lifetime used flags to designate the table numbers

The Beinhaker family celebrated at a sleepaway camp. Magnolia West Events used sliced wood with numbers painted in red as the table numbers

The Warter Bar Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Warter Bar Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Warter family from Livingston, New Jersey, celebrated son Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah on October 12, 2013, with a ceremony at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, New Jersey, and the reception the next day at Cedar Hill Country Club also in Livingston, New Jersey.

As the family tells Mitzvah Market, they wanted to celebrate the miracle and blessing of Ryan turning 13. At first they were not sure how to create a Bar Mitzvah for a child with special needs, but once committed, they took it head on. They wanted Ryan to experience it all and he sure did!

Pictured L-R: Dad Oren, Brother Jake, Bar Mitzvah boy Ryan, Mom Barbara and Brother Zachary.

The photographer was Dina Bustin Photography and the rest of the vendor spotlight is listed at the end of the spotlight.

When Ryan was born he had many medical problems. While he continues to live with more challenges than most of us could imagine, nothing stops Ryan.  He is a smart, funny kid who loves a good party, so that is exactly how they celebrated…with a great party!

The family had fun taking advantage of a photo op on the lawn of the golf course

To honor Ryan and celebrate their family, a small and intimate afternoon service was held at Temple B’nai Abraham. Rabbi Kulwin and Cantor Epstein worked incredibly well with Ryan to make his Bar Mitzvah a success. Since Ryan communicates in sign language, the Warters customized a one-of-a-kind service. Everything from signing and singing the blessings, to having a guitar player accompany the Cantor. All family members and many friends were included in the service.

Ryan held the torah

Julie Maloof Designs created this special invitation. The front had all of Ryan’s service and party information.

Since Ryan loves dancing and being the center of attention, EJ the DJ, MC Kershel and his entire crew made that happen! Amazing music and positive vibes flowed all night long.

The back of the favors were just like the back of the invitations

Guests were treated to an awesome candy bar at the end of the evening.

The family formed Ryan’s Team and participated in the Friendship Circle Walk on October 21, 2013, to raise awareness and support for The Friendship Circle and Life Town, a community center being built for children with special needs in Livingston, New Jersey. In commemoration, something in the center will be named in honor of Ryan’s project. To read more about Ryan’s Mitzvah project, click here.

Some advice from Mom Barbara:

“Don’t sweat the small stuff. It is important to think of a lot of details, but keep things in perspective. Think about your child and what they need or want, since after all, this celebration is for them! Celebrate with good friends. Love your family. Be in the moment. Count your blessings. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters.”

Mitzvah Project: PB&J Project Gets A “Whole” Lot of Help
May 14th, 2014

Mitzvah Project: PB&J Project Gets A “Whole” Lot of Help

We read about this story in the Broward/Palm Beach New Times and wanted to share it with our readers.

When it was time for 12 year-old Wellington, Florida, resident Ryan Shnider to plan his Mitzvah Project, he wanted to provide food to families, specifically peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

For the past six months, Ryan has been raising money for his “PB&J Project” by baking cookies and making lemonade to sell in front of his house.

“I look at this as turning lemons into lemonade…and into PB&J,” he says. To further fund the project, Ryan emailed Whole Foods Market’s Co-CEOs John Mackey and Walter Robb about his idea. Shortly thereafter, the project went forward. The result is a one-day fundraiser at participating Whole Foods stores in Broward and Palm Beach County in South Florida supporting the Pantry of Broward.

The Pantry of Broward serves seniors in need on low fixed incomes and grandparents raising their grandchildren throughout Broward County. Over 400 senior citizens take advantage of the pantry, which distributes more than 25,000 pounds of food per month.

On Tuesday, May 20, all Whole Foods Markets in Broward and Palm Beach counties will donate five percent of their net day’s sales to Ryan’s “PB&J Project.” In addition, participating stores will sell $2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, customized with a choice of nut butters, jellies, and toppings, with all proceeds benefiting the project.

Ryan and his family will stop at each participating store during the day to assist with the project.  Be sure to congratulate him on becoming a man in every sense of the word.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

  • Palm Beach Gardens – 10:45 a.m.
  • Wellington – 11:45 a.m.
  • Boca Raton – 12:45 p.m.
  • Coral Springs – 1:30 p.m
  • Pembroke Pines – 2:30 p.m.
  • Plantation – 3:45 p.m

Good luck Ryan, we know you will make many people very happy!

The party theme was “Oh the Thinks that Talia Thinks!” inspired by Dr. Seuss. They chose this theme because Talia has a playful habit of coming up with silly sayings when talking to her family.

Her Dr. Seuss themed reception was held in the evening at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The whimsical decorations, from table tops to directional signs, celebrated both Dr. Seuss and Bat Mitzvah girl Talia weaving through every aspect of the celebration.

The photographer was Kate Elliot Photography and the rest of the vendor information is listed below.

The place card table featured different Seuss characters on each card

Table 3 had 3 Fish, of course

Centerpieces were displayed with the famous hat from Dr. Seuss, “Cat in the Hat”

Each centerpiece was “Seussical” in its own way

And beautifully presented

The ballroom walls featured over-sized posters with famous Dr. Seuss sayings and inspirations

The Bat Mitzvah girl enjoyed the Horah. Notice the beautiful flowers strung along the ceiling

Delicious “Cat in the Hat” inspired gelato bar

More than “One Fish, Two Fish…” and Swedish Fish to enjoy on this on this candy buffet!
