Mitzvah Project: A Bar Mitzvah Boy’s Help & Hope

Cooper Davis lives in Plainview, New York, and will become a Bar Mitzvah in April, 2018. He attends Hebrew School at Woodbury Jewish Center in Woodbury, New York. For his Mitzvah Project, he has chosen to help and support P.S. 5, a classroom of elementary school-aged children in Brooklyn, New York, with a broad range of special needs.

Left: Cooper is pictured with some of the donated cooking equipment.

We asked Cooper a few questions about his Mitzvah Project:

MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular project?
CD:
There are some children who face emotional challenges every day because they live very hard lives. Some of the children struggle with Autism and others have different learning disabilities. I wanted to help make their school day a little easier and show them that people care about them.

MM: Can you give us details of your Mitzvah Project?
CD: My mom has a friend, Sharon Roberts, who teaches learning and emotionally disabled children in Special Education Class at P.S. 5 in Brooklyn, New York. The school is in a very low income area and the class always needs school supplies and books. They need things we take for granted every day. If I needed pencils or binders or books, my parents would go out and buy them for me. Some parents of the children at this school can’t do that all the time, they can’t afford to. We also found out that they love cooking, so we are asking for new or gently used cooking supplies, like pots and pans, mixing bowls, a toaster oven, a mini-microwave and things they can use to learn to cook so they can be independent some day. The cooking lessons give them confidence and long-term life training. The children with Autism really like to use the computer in the classroom, but they need headphones to drown out outside noise, so we are collecting those too. Hopefully when we donate everything, I can meet them and maybe cook a meal with them.

MM: Does your project have a start and end date, if so what are they?
CD: I began my project in January, 2017.  I don’t want it to have an end date, so we can keep helping children who need really need it.

MM: In your own words, what does it mean to you to do a Mitzvah Project for your Bar Mitzvah?
CD:
In Hebrew School they teach us to practice “tikkun olam” which means “to repair the world.” I think if everyone did something kind or thoughtful every single day, we could repair the world.  My Mitzvah Project is important to me because I hope to make a difference in a child’s life.

MM: Does it involve a donation?
CD: People have been generously donating school supplies such as pencils, crayons, notebooks, bowls, pots and pans. They are also donating gift cards so we can buy the other things that the children need.

MM: What are you doing to spread the word?
CD
: I emailed everyone in my family and some family friends and my mom posted about it on social media to help spread the word.

MM: How long can people donate to this charity?
CD:
As long as there is a need for classroom supplies, we will keep donating.

MM: Anything else we need to know about your Mitzvah Project?
CD: Sometimes living out here on Long Island in the comfortable suburbs, we forget that there are children who are homeless, who aren’t getting the help and education they need and who struggle because they have terrible home lives. We have to help them see that people care about them. I feel lucky to be able to help other children.

For further information on how to help support Cooper and the students in Sharon Robert’s Special Education Class at P.S. 5, please email Cooper’s Mom Rebecca Davis at bec53004@gmail.com.

A Bat Mitzvah Beach Bash Theme

Debbie’s Designs created a chic beach Bat Mitzvah at the Hilton Pearl River in Pearl River, New York. For Becca’s Beach Bash the team worked with tones of blue, aqua and white and incorporated beach elements into every inch of this space. From the minute guests walked in, they were ready for the perfect beach experience. By using beach themed décor elements, Debbie’s Designs was able to transform the venue’s ballroom into an elegant beach destination.

The photographer was Giulianna Marie Studios.

Decor

For the adult tables, there were three different designs which included custom tables. The lounge included pub tables, beach umbrellas, couches and a custom airplane soaring over the lounge.

A ‘Camp Josh’ Bar Mitzvah Weekend

The Francombe family from Atlanta, Georgia, celebrated their son Joshua’s Bar Mitzvah during a fun-filled weekend, Friday, April 17 – Sunday, April 19, 2015. The festivities were held at one of his favorite places, Camp Ramah Darom in the North Georgia Mountains.

Thanks to Mom Stacie, a nationally-renown wedding expert, no detail was overlooked making it a memorable weekend for family and friends who came from Wales, Great Britain, Utah, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Florida, Las Vegas, Delaware, Tennessee and North Carolina to celebrate and attend Camp Josh!

Mitzvah Invitation & Save the Date

Guests got into the camp spirit as soon as they received their custom invitation. Mom Stacie had a hand in the design working with Sirmantha Celesta from Paper Parfait.

Bar Mitzvah Branding

There were many “happy campers” as family and friends arrived at the campgrounds. Below are just a few of the many branded goodies (in Josh’s favorite team: Ohio State red and grey) that guests received upon arrival.

Mitzvah Services

After enjoying activities and lunch, there was a Friday night service and Shabbat dinner to kick off the weekend. Saturday morning Josh had his Bar Mitzvah service overlooking the lake and campus. He was joined by his grandparents and maternal great grandparents, ages 95 and 91, along with cousins, aunts and uncles.

Mitzvah Style

The Francombe family looked great throughout the weekend with different outfits for the casual photo shoot, the service and the party.

Mitzvah Camp Activities

After Saturday services and Kiddush luncheon, campers took part in fun activities ending with a camp-wide Color War where guests were divided into Team Red and Team Grey.

 Party Decor

Mom Stacie incorporated special elements into the event decor and food, styling her son’s celebration.

A Lacrosse & Wrestling Themed Bar Mitzvah Celebration

A Lacrosse & Wrestling Themed Bar Mitzvah Celebration

The Feldman family of Charlotte, North Carolina, celebrated their son Jack’s Bar Mitzvah on September 10, 2016, at Temple Beth El in Charlotte, North Carolina. Later that evening there was a reception in his honor at Providence Country Club also in Charlotte. It was an especially great day because it was Jack’s 13th birthday!

Mom, Stephanie Feldman, owner of Cutie Patootie Creations has created and designed for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs for years and was excited to create something special reflecting Jack’s many interests. She came up with an elegant and fun outcome incorporating all of her son’s requests: lacrosse, wrestling, navy blue and neon glow.

Mitzvah Market also featured Jack’s brother Joshua’s Ice Hockey themed Bar Mitzvah which Mom Stephanie creatively designed the invitations, logo, party decor and favors.

Mom to Mom Advice from Stephanie

“This is a day you and your family will remember forever. It’s a day that your child will hold near and dear to his/her heart for the rest of their lives. Enjoy and savor every moment of the planning process and try to not focus or stress over the little details and that every aspect needs to be “perfect.” When I found myself getting stressed out, I had to remind myself that this was not “my day” this was my “son’s day.” The details of the party are important but it was more important that my son felt confident and secure understanding and reading his Torah portions.

 Mitzvah Project

Jack participated in the program Remember Us and celebrated his Bar Mitzvah with a little boy named Lyusik Kandebman who was 9 years old when he was killed in the Holocaust. Jack took this very seriously and it was a very emotional service and speech for him. Jack is a cook and while attending Johnson and Wales summer culinary program in Charlotte,  he cooked meals for families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while in Charlotte for medical treatment.

The triplets raised money for Cycle For Survival, a annual cycling event held at Equinox gyms around the country. The event took place at Equinox in Roslyn, New York and it’s celebrating its 10th year. Abby, Riley and Jason’s uncle, Dr. Ross Levine is a researcher at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center working in the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP).  Cycle for Survival has over 31,000 participants all over the country and raises money for rare cancers through Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with 100 percent of the money raised going to research. This years upcoming ride will take place on March 4, 2017 and Team HOPP will continue to raise money in the triplets name. Abby, Riley and Jason are inspired by their  uncle’s work and chose this as something that they enjoy raising money for and will continue to each year.

Mom to Mom Advice from Mom Marcy

“Even though planning a Bar/Bat or B’nai Mitzvah is a major milestone in your child or children’s life, remember is just a party. It’s supposed to be a lot of fun and I tried to take it one step at a time. As a full-time working mother I made sure I planned well and managed my limited time well to ensure that I didn’t make the event too stressful for my family. Also as a mother of triplets only, this B’nai Mitzvah is my only chance to do this so I tried to make thoughtful choices and not be wasteful with time or money for anyone involved. I had a great time and so did Corey and the kids! That is what we will remember forever! “

Mom-to-Mom Advice from Mom Shelly

We all love the bells and whistles, but at the end of the day, you want to create an emotional and meaningful journey for your guests. Speeches, videos and creative programming throughout the night are what separates one party experience from another. Start planning early and be as organized as possible. It helps to have a great party planner too!

Mitzvah Project

Morgan and her Mom traveled to Guatemala to feed children at a malnutrition center through Orphan’s Heart. This is a non-profit organization on a mission to bring love and care to every child in need through international missions and child sponsorship. Mom Shelly and Morgan spent two days with babies and toddlers playing with them, feeding them and giving them some much needed attention and love.
