Sixth-grader Kayla Distenfeld of Teaneck, New Jersey created the perfect Bat Mitzvah project called, “Helping Hands with Rubber Bands.”
Kayla first discovered her love for weaving after she got a loom for her birthday a few years ago. Though she was having trouble weaving with yarn, she figured out how to do it with rubber bands. Kayla then began creating rubber band headbands. This hobby is now benefiting Chai Lifeline, an organization that finds ways to bring joy to the lives of young sick patients and their families. through family centered programs, activities and services.
Pictured L-R: Mom Rachel with Kayla selling headbands at the Sinai School Boutique.
We asked Kayla a few questions about her Mitzvah Project:
MM: Does your project have a start and end date, and if so, what are they?
KD: I started at the beginning of the summer last year and I would like to continue until I reach my goal of $1,800. So far I have raised $900. By raising $1,800, I can fulfill a special wish of a sick child through the Dare2Dream program of Chai Lifeline.
MM: Can you give us details of your Mitzvah Project?
KD: I am making headbands out of the rubber bands used in rainbow looms, which was a thing a year ago. I sell each headband for $10. The proceeds go towards the Dare2Dream Program. I want to fulfill the wish of a sick child. I am determined to reach my goal by the end of September 2017, just in time for my Bat Mitzvah.
Kayla's poster and beautiful headbands on display
MM: In your own words, what does it mean to you to do a Mitzvah Project for your Bat Mitzvah?
KD: I feel like a Bat Mitzvah project is a chance for girls to make a difference in the world as they become a fulfilled Jewish woman.
MM: How long can people donate to this charity?
KD: Until I reach my goal of $1,800 and I am half way there!
MM: What are you doing to spreading the word?
KD: I am selling my headbands at Carly’s Craze in Teaneck, New Jersey and I also sold them at the Sinai School Boutique. I am spreading the word on Facebook courtesy of my mother.
For further information about Helping Hands With Rubber Bands Bat Mitzvah Project, please email headbandsbykayla@yahoo.com or private message Mom Rachel through Facebook.
We thank Kayla and her family for sharing her great Bat Mitzvah Project with our readers and wish her much success in reaching her goal!

The Weinstein family celebrated daughter Meira’s Bat Mitzvah in a very familiar place! There was “no place like home” as they decided the perfect venue should be their beautiful backyard.
The “Baked by Meira” theme, along with colorful pom pom decor, was thoroughly integrated by Mom Michal, a talented graphic artist and event planner. We think she had a hand in the weather too…it was perfect! We featured older sister Eliana’s Hollywood themed Bat Mitzvah a few years ago.
Pictured L-R: Sisters Eliana and Reva, Bat Mitzvah girl Meira, Dad Jonathan, Mom Michal and Brother Jacob.
The photographer was HJ Photography by Jerry Meyer and the rest of the vendor information is listed at the end of the spotlight.

What a great idea as a sign-in. Guests wrote messages to Meira on colorful circles and placed them in the memory box. At the end of night, a name was called out from the box and they won an iTunes card!

Meira had a bake sale and raised $1,200 selling mini cupcakes for Kids of Courage. This organization is a groundbreaking volunteer organization dedicated to the support of sick children and their families, day and night, 365 days a year. Founded in 2008, Kids of Courage is committed to change the way people look at illness, and open up a world of support, hope and opportunity for every sick child and family, no matter how serious the diagnosis.

Some advice from Mom Michal:
“Be organized, start early, think outside the box. We were blessed with great weather, however doing an outdoor party is a risk…always have a plan B.”

Share your helpful advice about Bar and Bat Mitzvah planning and have it published in our annual Mitzvah Market Magazine!
Are you a Mom or Dad who have planned a Bar or Bat Mitzvah for your child? Do you have great “What I wish I had known” tips to share with other families about the Bar or Bat Mitzvah experience?
Tell us about the one thing you wished you had done differently in planning your celebration or the one idea that really worked well? What was so worth spending extra money on? Or conversely, what was a waste of money? What questions did you wish you had asked in advance of your photographer, venue, party planner or others? Should you have shopped earlier for outfits? Did it really matter if your tablecloths matched the invitations? Did the kids love your giveaways or do you wish you had thought of something different? If you could do it again, what would you do differently?
In other words, what do you wish someone had told you during your own planning process?
Please send your advice and one hi-res photo from your child’s celebration to info@mitzvahmarket.com. It will get published in the next edition of Mitzvah Market Magazine, November 2017.

Summer is almost here!
Your kids might be away at sleepaway camp and you have lots of time on your hands. Why not make use of this carefree time and start planning your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration? It’s a great chance to start crossing items off your to-do list.
Here are 5 reasons why you should start your planning now!
1. Sitting by the pool or on the beach is a great place to make your guest list and review a list of venues, planners, DJs, and photographers that you are interested in using.
2. You can contact vendors easily using the “Mitzvah Connect” form on each profile page in the Vendor Directory. Since there are few Bar and Bat Mitzvahs during the summer months, these Bar Bat Mitzvah vendors have more time to meet and discuss the details of your celebration.
3. You can do your own research and narrow down the choices. When your child gets home, you can present them with the ones you think are best but still give them options.
4. You have time to leisurely shop for a dress, shoes and accessories for yourself and family members.
5. Sit back and enjoy the planning process…..
