Mitzvah Project: Two Ambulances For Magen David Adom
March 28th, 2012

Mitzvah Project: Two Ambulances For Magen David Adom

We are excited to tell you about 13 year old Robert Leeds from Los Angeles, California and his Mitzvah Project!

This young man decided that in lieu of getting Bar Mitzvah gifts, he would ask his guests to donate to his Mitzvah Project which was to raise enough money to purchase two ambulances for Magen David Adom.

Magen David Adom is an organization of trained volunteer and professional medical responders that’s mandated by the Israeli government to provide the nation’s pre-hospital emergency medical care, including disaster, ambulance and blood services. These ambulances are on call 24/7, logging nearly 10 million miles and caring for nearly 570,000 patients annually.

When the invitations to his Bar Mitzvah celebration were mailed, the return card stated, “In lieu of gifts, let’s come together and do a very special act of kindness in our holy land. Join hands and put a lifesaving ambulance on the ground in Israel. Please send your tax-deductible contribution in Robert’s honor to MDA.”

Diana and Fred Leeds, Robert’s parents, never dreamed these gifts would add up to enough money for two ambulances, but more than 800 people attended his Beatles themed Bar Mitzvah and generously responded to that request.

As guests followed the red carpet to enter the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport, where the reception was held, they were greeted by two different types of MDA ambulances, reminding them of the cause to which they had contributed.

Rock with Robert was the theme

The Leeds family poses in front of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit before being shipped to save lives in Israel. The back row from left to right are Bar Mitzvah boy Robert, Alisa, Charlie, and Andrew, and in front are Jonathan and parents Dina and Fred

Although guests at their celebration enjoyed fabulous decor and entertainment by multiple musical groups, a break-dance ensemble, jugglers, acrobats, the USC Band, and much more, Mom Dina says, ”But the centerpiece of the event was to see how a 13-year-old brought the community together. Everyone stood in support of this lifesaving cause.”

Even more special was when American Friends of Magen David Adom CEO Arnold Gerson presented Robert with the Maimonides Award during his party, making him the youngest recipient ever. AFMDA Western Regional Director Yossi Mentz said with excitement, “Robert’s Bar Mitzvah had both the Bar and a Mitzvah. There’s no greater Mitzvah than saving a life.”

Robert receives the Maimonides award from Arnold Gerson, Chief Executive Officer of American Friends of Magen David Adom

Robert said, “I realize that in life I have been very blessed. This is my Bar Mitzvah statement and the responsibility that I am taking on. It’s my hope to show Israel and the Jewish people that I stand with them and that’s what becoming a man means to me. My family was in Israel a few years ago and we toured the MDA National Blood Services Center Blood Center with AFMDA Israel Representative Jonathan Feldstein, which made an impact on all of us.”

A Bar Mitzvah that’s able to raise funds for two ambulances is not a everyday occurrence, which is why American Friends of Magen David Adom also offers other Mitzvah Project opportunities, including its Red Bag of Courage Program, which enables teenagers to raise a minimum of $1,000, the cost of fully stocking a paramedic’s medical bag. Teens who complete the program, typically prospective Bar Mitzvah celebrants or members of youth groups, receive a monogrammed replica of a paramedic’s bag for their own use.

For more information about Magen David Adom, which provides Israel’s pre-hospital emergency medical care, including disaster, ambulance, and blood services, call Rob Rosenthal at 212-757-1627.

Mom Jennifer explains, “Caroline’s dad is not Jewish, and many of our family and friends who were invited to celebrate weren’t Jewish either.” She adds, “To make everyone comfortable, included in the invitation, was a card that explained what a Bat Mitzvah is and what to expect at the service as well as dress attire. People really appreciated that.”

Some Mom to Mom advice from Jennifer:
“Plan ahead and don’t leave details for the last minute. We had a very snowy winter, filled with many blizzards, and I knew that if I didn’t have everything finished the week before, I would have a problem if it snowed. My goal was not to step foot in any store the week of my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah! Good thing I planned ahead, because we had 2 major snow storms that week. Getting everything finished a bit early also allowed me to really enjoy that last week with Caroline. I was able to listen to her practice her torah portions, spend some quality time together, and not worry about details that had to be finished.

When it comes to the big ticket items, like choosing the venue and DJ, do your homework before you discuss it with your child. Just present options that you would be happy with and are within your budget.

Involve family and friends in the Mitzvah Projects if you can. We have a lot of family and friends who are not Jewish, and didn’t really understand what a Bat Mitzvah was all about. This gave them a great understanding of how important your Mitzvah Projects are and that this allows you to truly make the difference in the lives of others. I truly think it makes your Bar/Bat Mitzvah that much more meaningful, when your family & friends have helped you along the way. The party is a fabulous celebration, no matter what type of party you have, but what warmed my heart the most, was watching Caroline help others through her Mitzvah Projects and listening to her read from the Torah. Don’t lose sight of what this day is all about – the party is secondary. I could not have been more proud – it was the most special day.

Most of all … seize the moment and enjoy this incredibly special day.”

On The Circuit…With Tara

By Tara Silberg

It’s Tara, telling YOU what’s happening on the Bar/Bat Mitzvah circuit today.

Last time I wrote about my trip to Coco Events to try out their Hollywood Voiceover Booth.

Today it’s all about one of my favorite topics…shoes!

Do you remember being a little kid and trying on your Mother’s high heels? I definitely do. But today, in our Bat/Bar Mitzvah world, those heels seem extremely small.

Today, the average heel is at least 4-5 inches (at least in my town.) These shoes range from Steve Madden wedges to Manolo Blahnik pumps. Name any shoe, you’ll find it at a Mitzvah party.

Just stop by on a Saturday night and you’ll get a real taste of what I’m talking about. But finding a shoe when attending someone elses party is easy. The hard part is finding one for your own Bat Mitzvah!

You may need multiple shoes. One for Temple, one for the cocktail hour, and one for the party (if you’re like me, that is.) But truthfully, who wants to wear 6 inch heels for their own Bat Mitzvah? Many girls buy stunning heels and wear them throughout the night, but I just couldn’t stand that. I had another idea when the issue was brought to my attention by my Mother. A brilliant thought came into my mind, “Why should I have to be uncomfortable at my own party?”

When I walked through the mall with my Brother and Grandmother a few days later, I told them my idea. Hence, we stopped in the Nike store and voila! I had instant relief. Why? Well, I had made an executive decision to do something original. Something that hadn’t been done before.

I designed my own Nike high-tops! We had stopped in the store and designed them right there. And many would think designing a shoe would be highly priced, right? Wrong. This shoe was reasonably priced and under my long gown, kept my feet comfortable all night. If you’re looking for shoes for your own Bat Mitzvah, keep in mind that custom Converse, Keds, etc. can be awesome and last you for months afterwards.

That’s all for this post. More to come on the circuit soon!

About Tara Silberg
I’m in 7th grade at Jericho Middle School and I love art. When I say art, I’m talking about photography, painting, and drawing. I also love music. When I feel stressed, I listen to my iPod to calm down. I will most likely attend between 60-70 Bar/Bat Mitzvahs before I finish 8th grade. I’m excited to be reporting from “The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Circuit” for Mitzvah Market.com.

The Citron Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

In April, 2011 Chloe Citron led her service at Temple Or Elohim in Jericho, New York. The family then celebrated her Bat Mitzvah with an evening party at Temple Judea of Manhasset, New York.

Chloe fell in love with a neon invitation and those colors became her bright theme!

Scott from Art Photography provided all the photography and the rest of the vendors are listed at the bottom of this spotlight.

Here’s some Mom-to-Mom advice from Jill:
“I loved my vendors. I didn’t want to spend time shopping around and interviewing lots of different vendors. In addition to not wanting to waste my time, I didn’t want to develop a rapport with people and then have to tell them I wasn’t using them. So instead, I interviewed my friends to see what they liked and didn’t like about the vendors they used. I found most of my vendors based on recommendations from friends. I made the right decision in choosing each of the vendors I used.”

Stamp - Mitzvah Project Idea

Chloe loves to read and she wanted to share her love of reading with those who are less fortunate so she collected gently used books (children’s and adult’s) and donated them to Reading Reflections, a non-profit organization that collects and delivers books to community centers, libraries and schools in needy areas locally and around the world.

Citron Mitzvah Project

Reading Reflections recently teamed up with h2 Empower – an organization dedicated to improving lives in Africa through education. This organization is helping Reading Reflections bring books to rural villages in southern Ethiopia. Chloe asked people to drop off books at her house and at her Temple. The Citrons entire basement floor was covered with piles of books. They sorted the books by age and type and donated a couple of thousand books to the organization.

Mitzvah Project: Girl Power
March 21st, 2012

Mitzvah Project: Girl Power

How many Mitzvah kids do you know that are planning to publish a book?

Meet Alexandra Kukoff, a seventh grader from Thousand Oaks, California who felt overwhelmed when it came time to decide what to do for her Bat Mitzvah project.

Her Bat Mitzvah was fast approaching (August 20, 2011), and she wanted to complete a project that would enable her to make a contribution to society.

So she decided to write a book! “A Jewish Girl’s Guide to a Bat Mitzvah Project” is a compilation of stories of girls and women who have completed inspiring, interesting and amazing B’not Mitzvah Projects, regardless of when they completed them.

Until the book is published by Behrman House, you can read all the great stories on her blog.

We caught up with Alexandra (who is pictured above) to ask her some questions and learn more:

MM: Why did you decide to complete this particular Mitzvah Project?
AK:
When I was in the process of choosing a Bat Mitzvah project, I felt overwhelmed with all the project opportunities. By the time I wanted to contribute to all of them, my Bat Mitzvah would have been long gone. My book, “A Jewish Girl’s Guide to a Bat Mitzvah Project,” will hopefully inspire many girls to get active and contribute to a Mitzvah Project, and in that way, I personally can contribute to many different causes at once.

MM: Can you give us details about your book?
AK:
In my book, “A Jewish Girl’s Guide to a Bat Mitzvah Project,” I interview girls and women, who have had their Bat Mitzvahs from long ago to just recently, about their amazing Mitzvah Projects, and I include their stories in my Mitzvah Project profiles.

MM: When did you first start writing your book?:
AK:
I first started writing my book in the summer of 2010, and my book will be published next fall by Behrman House publications.

MM: How did you get the book published?
AK:
To find a publisher, my mother and I contacted the head of Behrman House, who suggested writing a blog alongside my book and led us to Aviva Werner, my editor.

MM: Tell us in your own words, what does it mean to you to do a Mitzvah Project for your Bat Mitzvah?
AK:
To me, completing a Bar/Bat Mitzvah project is a way to help the community and, in the simplest sense, to do a Mitzvah.  And to me, that is the most rewarding thing a person can do.

MM: What are you doing to spreading the word?
AK:
All the proceeds from my book will be donated to Nes Gadol, a program in Vista Del Mar that helps underprivileged girls and women with special needs realize their dreams of becoming Bat Mitzvot. Vista Del Mar helps tutor and fund these girls’ Bat Mitzvot. To spread the word about Nes Gadol, I am speaking about the program whenever I speak at or attend an event for my project, and I include a bit about Nes Gadol in the flyers I pass out.

MM: Please give us one great idea from your book.
AK:
I recently profiled an amazing Mitzvah Project about Kinneret Katz, who took huge steps to conserving the water in Lake Kinneret.

MM: How long can people donate to this project?

Mitzvah Inspire: PINK Theme For Sisters

For DJS Events, details are everything and every occasion is unique.

They are the professionals behind the scenes; executing event design, location research, transportation, personnel, accommodations, flower displays and anything else your event requires.

They recently produced a Bat Mitzvah for sisters named Alanah and Shainah at the Watermill in Smithtown, New York. These sisters are 18 months apart and had a hard time agreeing on a theme, but both agreed that they loved Victoria Secret’s PINK!

Denisimo Photography was the photographer for this event.

Check out all the pretty details below:

Since one sister liked “bling” and the other did not, there needed to be a balance. The above t-shirts added a casual element to the place card holders with crystals

A hot pink carpet added a dramatic flair to the entrance

Cotton hot pink and white linens were used to match the theme and Pedestals Floral Decorators created all the floral arrangements

Mitzvah Inspire: The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a young adult novel that has been very popular among teens.

Opening in theaters March 23, 2012, The Hunger Games movie is based on the first installment in the best-selling trilogy and chosen as the Bat Mitzvah theme for one teen from Austin, Texas who loves the book series.

This Hunger Games themed party was complete with a fiery DJ booth, care packages falling from the sky with bread and spiles, and fire centerpieces.

Caplan Miller Events put it all together for her along with Petal Pushers, The Pink Tulip, Texas Pro DJ, Personalized Promotions, Townsley Designs, and FILO Productions

The AT&T Education and Conference Center was the ideal setting for this Hunger Games themed Bat Mitzvah.

Book covers were blown up and used as posters

Fans of The Hunger Games know that bread is an important part of the story, so the Bat Mitzvah decor included this element

Fire flame centerpieces with flashing blinking lights

The DJ booth had flames to add to the decor

Custom made water bottles were filled with gourmet popcorn and given at the end of the party

We thank Caplan Miller Events for sharing this Bat Mitzvah celebration with our readers. We hope this inspired our Hunger Games fans for their own party!
