Runway Couture: The Making Of A Mom’s Custom Dress

Runway Couture specializes in extraordinary and unique evening wear, cocktail dresses, suiting and great statement pieces. They have one-of-a-kind, custom designs as well as an array of ready-to-wear dresses and gowns handpicked by their design team to flatter any figure.

We spoke with Lisa Chait, a three-time Bar Mitzvah Mom about her experience working with Runway Couture:

MM: How many dresses have you had created by Runway Couture?
LC: My most recent gown for my youngest son’s Bar Mitzvah was actually the 4th beautiful dress Kimberly and Blanca made for me. They created three gowns for all three of my son’s Bar Mitzvahs and they also made me a stunning suit for my first son’s temple service. I had such a wonderful experience at Runway Couture and working with Kimberly and Blanca was a pleasure.

MM: Why did you decide on a custom dress?
LC: From the start, I knew I wanted something custom for all three of my sons’ Bar Mitzvahs. I didn’t want a dress that was already in the store or that one of my guests might wear. I tried on some ready made dresses just to see what style I liked on me. For my most recent party, I knew I wanted a dress that was simple but made a statement at the same time.

MM: Please describe the process?
LC: I set up an appointment with Kimberly to start designing the dress about four months before the event. We worked together to pick out the fabric and the color. Kimberly drew a sketch of the dress and that was the starting point. We had quite a few fittings since the dress was very fitted and needed to fit just so. The dress came out beautiful. It was perfect and exactly what I had envisioned.

MM: Did the finished result look anything like the original sketch?
LC: We did change a couple of things on the dress from the first sketch. We added some crystals on the top at the very end.

MM: Any advice for those who plan on having a custom dress created for their child’s Bar Bat Mitzvah celebration?
LC: My advice for anyone making a custom dress is to pick out a fabric or lace that you like and then let Kimberly do what she does best, which is to create stunning, one-of-a-kind dresses. Everyone at Runway Couture is extremely professional and they will not let the dress leave the store unless you are very happy. I would not go anywhere else to have my dresses made.
