The Brodsky Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Brodsky Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Brodsky family from Orlando, Florida celebrated daughter Sara’s Bat Mitzvah on December 1, 2012. There was a morning service at Congregation of Reform Judaism in Orlando, followed by an evening party at two different venues where they celebrated with a Cirque de Sara theme!

Pictured L-R: Brother Jake, Dad Mike, Mom Lisa and Bat Mitzvah girl Sara.

Mike Basher of A Magic Moment Photography was the photographer and the rest of the vendor information is listed below.

Mom Lisa has a small stationery business, RSVP 2 Me and ordered this festive invitation from Carlson Craft.

Sara looks great in her custom blue cocktail dress

The theme was Cirque de Sara. Mom Lisa used 99designs.com, a marketplace for graphic and logo designers. After holding a contest on their Website, she hired graphic artist Leo Cadiz who came up with the best logo.

A great logo that really captures the theme of the party

Sara’s party was held in two venues right next to each other, with cocktails at The Abbey and the reception at The Mezz located in downtown Orlando.

Guests were greeted with a red carpet marquee that read, “One Night Only Cirque de Sara.”

The Brodskys worked with event planner Faye Novick of Just Events! and the decor was created by Just Celebrate and Raining Roses Productions.

The room had pops of colors

Whimsical centerpieces were fun to look at and celebrated Sara’s love of music

The lounge had great up lighting which was provided by The Abbey

Arthur’s Catering provided unique food stations.

A yummy slider station was very popular

Jammin Express and MC Jason provided the music entertainment and kept Sara’s guests on the dance floor all night!

 Sara accompanied by performers

Their entertainment was very unique and included interactive performers such as contortionists, jugglers, hula-hoopers and even a lady dressed up as a “live” candy bar.

We love this candy girl

The logo was used as the cover of the sign-in book.

Mom Lisa put it together from MyPublisher.com

Patrick with A Magic Moment worked with Sara to create a candle lighting video. The video recorded Sara announcing who would light each candle, and then showed a photo loop of those people (for each candle) with Sara and her family over the years. It solved the problem of not being able to hear when the guest of honor announces the candles.

Check out the video here.

Sara starting her candle lighting ceremony

The favors- embroidered towels and drawstring bags- were from Infinity Embroidery.

We love the colors and the logo!

Sara collected new toys and crafts to donate to Harbor House, a domestic violence shelter. She wrapped and shrink-wrapped the items and used them as the centerpieces for the Kiddush lunch, and brought them to the shelter the following week.

When Sara brought over all the centerpieces, the shelter gave the Brodsky Family a tour and explained to Sara their mission and how they serve the community

Advice from Mom Lisa:
“Plan early and relax. Enjoy the day and night. If something doesn’t go as planned, chances are your guests will not notice, and if they do, it really does not matter. They are there to share a great moment with you, and they will all have a great time, no matter what. Your child worked hard and as long as they have the time of their lives, the event is a success.”

Executive Mom Plans A Bat Mitzvah Part 1

Executive Mom Plans A Bat Mitzvah Part 1

By Marisa Thalberg, ExecutiveMoms.com

I’m excited to share my personal experience in planning my daughter Hannah’s Bat Mitzvah. In going through this process, I have had time to think about my own Bat Mitzvah. I wanted to share some of my memories….

It was one of the most glorious days of my adolescence, with roughly twice the number of friends and family together to celebrate my ascent into “womanhood” (as Jewish tradition would have it) than my husband and I would have between us at our wedding.

Perhaps because photos of my growing up are scattered, having an album of my Bat Mitzvah photos keeps the memories of that day that much more clarified in my mind than most others from those surrounding years. My father as it turned out would pass away only 7 years later; my favorite grandmother just 4 years after that, so the preserved sight of them laughing and reveling makes this event all that more special to me.

My family and I, on my Bat Mitzvah day in 1982

Flash forward to today, and it is a true sense of time warp. How could I be the parent now beginning to plan my own oldest daughter’s Bat Mitzvah? As typical busy, modern, New York parents, the role religion has played in our lives is hugely tempered, and arguably far more ambiguous than it was when I was growing up. In fact, right or wrong, one of our priorities in trying to find any kind of congregation to align with, was that it would offer our kids a just one-day-a-week religious school option, which felt proportionately acceptable to us relative to all the other activities that hold sway over our family’s calendars.

However, as suggested above, it is the realization that ultimately, my Bat Mitzvah remains such a seminal memory from my youth of family, love and tradition, that it is important to me that my girls have the opportunity to have this same milestone event, hopefully surrounded by those most special to us as well.

And that brings us to… the PLANNING of a Bat Mitzvah.

In NYC and perhaps even worse in the surrounding suburbs, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs have become wild extravaganzas – weddings on teenage steroids. My mother – who claimed a preference for tuna fish even as my dad aspired to give her caviar – was as I increasingly appreciate now, a visionary ahead of her time. In planning my Bat Mitzvah, her priority was to be budget-savvy yet resourceful. Her inspired venue? (which I’m sure I initially resisted) She convinced the private school I attended on Long Island (at which I was in a very small minority of Jews) to ‘rent’ us the space and let us convert the gym into a reception hall. In her mind this was a place with personal significance to my life, uniqueness, and appropriateness to a 13 year old vs. a standard catering hall.

As you can see, the exterior was as gorgeous as any venue one might ever choose

The party inside spared nothing – yet somehow was just RIGHT

All these years later, my tastes and style are quite different from my mother’s – yet I realize it will be her creative approach that I’m actually emulating in trying to plan for MY daughter a Bat Mitzvah that for HER turn, is also… just right.

A Bar Mitzvah Celebration At 83 Years Young!

A Bar Mitzvah Celebration At 83 Years Young!

Gotham T-shirts designs and prints favors for over 200 Bar Bat Mitzvahs a year.

They offer personalized custom screen printing, embroidery, art and theme designs for Bar Bat Mitzvah celebrations.

Their fashion designs look best on hooded and zipper sweatshirts, T-shirts, flannel PJ sweatpants & nylon draw string back packs.

Recently they printed T-shirts for Ed, an 83 year old man who decided to celebrate for the second time! His Bar Mitzvah was held on February 23rd at the Aventura-Turnberry Jewish Center in Florida and included T-shirt favors for his family and close friends!

Designed and printed by Gotham T-shirts

We asked why Ed wanted to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah for the second time and were told, “The reason for a “2nd Bar Mitzvah” is that there is Jewish lore that a lifetime is equal to 3-score +10 years. That would mean that life ends at 70 years, therefore, 13 years after that would make the Bar Mitzvah 83-years old.”

Ed’s celebration was an intimate event with immediate family and close friends. It took place in a restaurant in the building where Ed and his wife live, The Hampton’s at Aventura.

Ed was thrilled to have everyone together to celebrate his special event. Mazel Tov to Ed and his family and thank you for sharing your story with Mitzvah Market.

Sports Themed Bar Mitzvah With DIY Touches

The Ackerman family celebrated Alex’s Bar Mitzvah on April 27, 2013 at The Jewish Center in Princeton, New Jersey.  Dinner and dancing followed that evening at the Greenacres Country Club in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Alex is a sports fan but this was not your typical sports themed party. Thanks to creative Mom Andi’s DIY touches and the Princeton University Band greeting guests, this party scored on every level.

Pictured L-R: Dad Brad, Bar Mitzvah boy Alex, brother Jacob and Mom Andi.

The vendor information is listed at the end of the spotlight.

Alex’s Mincha service was held at The Jewish Center in Princeton, New Jersey. Alex smiling as he is holding the Torah

The invitation suite, in classic navy and white, was from Fran Amir of Exclusively For You.. Alex on a stamp from Zazzle.com

The Ackerman family looked great. Mom Andi’s silver cocktail dress was from Saks Fifth Avenue. Little brother Jacob, Dad Brad and Bar Mitzvah boy Alex were all wearing suits with blue ties from Schweon’s Clothing

Guests were greeted by the Princeton University Band. They played as guests drove up…

…and created excitement right from the start!

Mom Andi is so creative. She did much of the decor herself. These personalized bobble head place cards featured a picture of each guest!

Showcasing Alex’s favorite sports teams were these centerpieces made with supplies from Michael’s Craft stores

An ardent Philadelphia Flyer’s fan, this centerpiece celebrates Alex’s favorite hockey team

Mom Andi  put together the out-of-towner boxes which held snacks and water bottle labels. Stickers from Zazzle.com were placed over black duct tape

Each table number had a different photo of Alex and corresponding age. Mom Andie covered glass cylinders in transparent paper with pictures printed from the computer

Alex making his way into the crowd for his entrance into the reception

Alex in the chair during the Horah

MC Leon and the All Around Entertainment dancers kept everyone on the dance floor

Fedora’s Cakes By Design created this special cake for Alex. Cutout silhouettes of each sport that Alex plays decorated the cake

The handiwork of Mom Andi who put together this candy buffet which included a giant “A” centerpiece with glued York peppermint bites

Advice from Mom Andi:

“Start planning early and get organized. I created an ongoing album with photos and Websites of images of things I liked. So when I was ready to place the orders, everything from kippots to napkins, I had the numbers and Websites on hand.”

Runway Couture: The Making Of A Mom’s Custom Dress
August 25th, 2013

Runway Couture: The Making Of A Mom’s Custom Dress

Runway Couture specializes in extraordinary and unique evening wear, cocktail dresses, suiting and great statement pieces. They have one-of-a-kind, custom designs as well as an array of ready-to-wear dresses and gowns handpicked by their design team to flatter any figure.

We spoke with Lisa Chait, a three-time Bar Mitzvah Mom about her experience working with Runway Couture:

MM: How many dresses have you had created by Runway Couture?
LC: My most recent gown for my youngest son’s Bar Mitzvah was actually the 4th beautiful dress Kimberly and Blanca made for me. They created three gowns for all three of my son’s Bar Mitzvahs and they also made me a stunning suit for my first son’s temple service. I had such a wonderful experience at Runway Couture and working with Kimberly and Blanca was a pleasure.

A custom creation by Runway Couture

MM: Why did you decide on a custom dress?
LC: From the start, I knew I wanted something custom for all three of my sons’ Bar Mitzvahs. I didn’t want a dress that was already in the store or that one of my guests might wear. I tried on some ready made dresses just to see what style I liked on me. For my most recent party, I knew I wanted a dress that was simple but made a statement at the same time.

Lisa with her son at his recent Bar Mitzvah celebration at The Sands At Atlantic Beach

MM: Please describe the process?
LC: I set up an appointment with Kimberly to start designing the dress about four months before the event. We worked together to pick out the fabric and the color. Kimberly drew a sketch of the dress and that was the starting point. We had quite a few fittings since the dress was very fitted and needed to fit just so. The dress came out beautiful. It was perfect and exactly what I had envisioned.

Kimberly’s original sketch

MM: Did the finished result look anything like the original sketch?
LC: We did change a couple of things on the dress from the first sketch. We added some crystals on the top at the very end.

Lisa changed into this short “off the rack” dress also from Runway Couture for the last hour of her son’s Bar Mitzvah celebration

MM: Any advice for those who plan on having a custom dress created for their child’s Bar Bat Mitzvah celebration?
LC: My advice for anyone making a custom dress is to pick out a fabric or lace that you like and then let Kimberly do what she does best, which is to create stunning, one-of-a-kind dresses. Everyone at Runway Couture is extremely professional and they will not let the dress leave the store unless you are very happy. I would not go anywhere else to have my dresses made.

The Miranda Hirsch Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The Miranda Hirsch Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

Miranda Hirsch celebrated her Bat Mitzvah with a fun kids party on February 2, 2013 at Hudson Terrace, an event space in New York City.

For her initial “M,” she had a chic and sophisticated M&M theme.

Pictured L-R: Mom Pam, younger sister Caroline, Bat Mitzvah girl Miranda and Dad Howard

The photographer was Stephen Strutt of Stephen Andrews Photography and the rest of the vendors are listed below.

Miranda’s modern and colorful invitation was conceived by Miranda and her mom, and was created by Caroline Nussbaum of The Perfect Type.

The primary colors were carried throughout the party

Miranda wore a dress by Designing Dreams.

Miranda posing against the bar with oversized pictures of her in the background

The decor at Hudson Terrace included up lighting in primary colors of red, yellow, blue, green, and orange to coordinate with the look of classic M&M’s.

Adding to the décor were over 60 lbs of M&M’s in assorted clear vases, fish bowls and grande martini glasses

Even the bathroom doors had oversized frames filled with M&M posters!

The chandeliers had LED screens that displayed different graphics that emphasized her color scheme

Cute napkins coordinated with the M&M theme

The sign-in board was created by Stephen Andrews Photography and featured a muted picture of Miranda as a child and a larger picture of her now.

Signed by all of her guests

Entertainment Tonite provided the music for this celebration. They kept guests on the dance floor all night long!

With design ideas from Miranda and Mom Pam, LB Squared created the bright orange pullover sweatshirt that Miranda gave to her friends. They’ve been wearing them ever since!

Miranda’s Sweet Shop was set up with lots of great sweets for guests to take home.

Advice from Mom Pam:
“Take a deep breath and don’t sweat the small stuff. Make lists, then make more lists. Include your daughter (or son) in the decision making, but NOT with everything!”

The St. Pierre Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight
August 5th, 2013

The St. Pierre Bat Mitzvah Family Spotlight

The St. Pierre family from Springfield, Virginia celebrated their daughter Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah on February 16, 2013 at Congregation Olam Tikvah in Fairfax, Virginia and an evening reception at the Chantilly National Golf and Country Club in Centreville, Virginia.

Sarah wanted a glamorous, fun, high energy party and with the help of Mom Ilisa, that’s just what she got! We are excited to share their ideas and all the elements that Ilisa made herself for her daughter’s celebration.

Photography was done by Zachary Ruben and the rest of the vendor information is listed at the bottom of this spotlight.

Pictured above L-R: Mom Ilisa, Bat Mitzvah girl Sarah, younger sister Rachel and Dad Steve.

Sarah’s ceremony was at Congregation Olam Tikvah, Fairfax, Virginia.

Sarah ready for her service

The St. Pierre family at the Bimah

As a reminder to Save-the-Date, guests received rubber bracelets that were imprinted with “Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah 2-16-13”

Attached was an original poem

Sarah’s invitation in pastel colors

One of the creative touches by Mom Ilisa were the ribbon wands she made for each guest. There were many trips to craft stores like A.C. Moore and Michaels but we think it was worth it! They hung on blue glitter poles that spelled out Sarah’s first and middle name.

Guests’ names and table numbers were printed on the stick and looked great on display

They also doubled as toys to use on the dance floor and looked great in the photos

The color scheme was royal blue and pink. The feather centerpieces, made by creative Mom Ilisa, were from kits that she found online at Fabulous Feathers and put together herself.

Hanging crystals and lights added to the bling factor

The table numbers were frames found on clearance at Michaels and then she used rhinestone scrapbook stickers for the numbers

So Fresh Entertainment with MC Chad and his amazing team kept the dance floor packed the entire evening with no breaks!

MC Chad singing to Sarah

Lots of fun on the dance floor

Instead of a traditional candle lighting, the St. Pierre family asked each person they wanted to honor to come up and light a Havdalah candle. All the guests stood in a circle on the dance floor. They had 15 candles and after everyone’s candle was lit, they all sang the Havdalah service.

The candle lighting took place at the beginning of the party, went quickly and didn’t create a big lull in the middle of the night

The room looked great all lit up with these 15 candles

Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah cake was created by Wanda’s Cakes.

Another one of Mom Ilisa’s touches was the guest sign-in book that she created on Picaboo.com. It featured photos of every guest with the Bat Mitzvah girl together at some time during her life!

Everyone signed near their photo

Sarah and her Mom developed the logo idea, then sent it off to J-Dogs Amusements and Promotional Products Co. where they put the logo on the Soffe shorts for the girls and mesh shorts for the boys.

The poles were used again for the favor bags display. The bags were packed with pops of colored paper and Sarah’s logo on the tag

The caterer at the Chantilly National Country Club did a s’mores bar which was a huge hit. They also had an ice cream sundae bar, and cake, coffee and hot chocolate stations.

Guests loved the delicious s’mores bar

Ilisa created the candy bar herself using glass containers from Walmart and bling adhesive from Michaels

For her Mitzvah Project, Sarah collected donations of new toys and/or money to benefit Dr. Bear’s Toy Closet at Children’s National Medical Center.

A well- stocked Dr. Bear’s Closet ensures that every patient has a gift for holidays, birthdays and most importantly, a little something to serve as a reward for their courage in fighting an illness. All of her guests brought toys to the party and she collected an entire SUV (back seats down) full of toys to bring to the hospital!

Sarah on the way to bring her donations over to Children’s National Medical Center

Advice from Mom Ilisa:
“The only thing I would change is to have the caterer save dinners for Steve and myself for after the party. Neither of us ate one bite the whole night!”

Logo Love!

Logo Love!

Everyone loves to look at Bar Bat Mitzvah logos for inspiration!

We recently ran our Best Of….Mitzvah Family Spotlight Logos story and asked our readers to send in their creative logos too.

Here are two that we have received:

Mitzvah Market reader Barbara sent us this logo designed by Fabudesigns.com and said, “Our logo is meant to pay tribute to my son’s heritage, as he is reading the same parsha that my late father in law read in 1942, 72 years later”

Mitzvah Market reader Elise sent us her daughter’s “Carly Land” logo in two versions created by Balloon Artistry!

Thank you for sending these in!
