By Dr. and Mrs. Mitzvah (aka David and Danielle Ockman, “Favor It Things“)
We celebrated our son Blake’s Bar Mitzvah on October 11, 2014 and can’t wait to share all the details in our Mitzvah Family Spotlight story – coming soon!
Here are some things we would like to share about our experience:
TOP 5 THINGS TO REMEMBER
Start planning early—-it’s never too early
You are the parent, you make the decisions
It’s ok to make your reception as small or as large as you like! Celebrating a simcha is a mitzvah!
Have a B’mitzvah “day of coordinator”—you cannot be dealing with all the details that day
Things may be forgotten, no one will notice
TOP 5 THINGS WE LEARNED ABOUT PLANNING A B’MITZVAH RECEPTION
Tradition should be respected, don’t be “so unique” that you drop the things that make it a b’mitzvah (this is not a birthday party!)
Involve the older generations, bring the history and the future together at the reception—it is a gift to be able to honor grandparents and great-grandparents
Bring the WOW factor—keep guests intrigued
End the reception before it ends itself, don’t let it dwindle down
Leave the guests with one last surprise before they leave
ABOUT DAVID AND DANIELLE OCKMAN David and Danielle Ockman love South Florida and reside in Deerfield Beach with their 12 year old son Blake, and 7 year old daughter, Skylar. Blake’s B’mitzvah is scheduled for October, 2014.
David is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in the field of addictions for over 20 years and Danielle is a Social Worker and the Dean of Students at a private Jewish Day School. Danielle’s passion for making people treats lead her to preparing “specialty and custom” chocolate and edible B’mitzvah favors for “Favor It Things.” David and Danielle have become known in the B’mitzvah community of South Florida, as they host the Facebook group, “South Florida Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Planning Group.” Some consider this group to be the B’mitzvah hub, bringing parents and vendors together for a “virtual B’mitzvah showcase” everyday. Since starting the FB page, David has been called “Dr. Mitzvah” and the couple continue to talk many B’mitzah parents down off the ledge!

Party Art, LLC., a custom party, decor and event planning company in New Jersey, created a hauntingly fun Bat Mitzvah celebration. The Victory Sports Bar and Grill located within the Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, was transformed into the ultimate “Boo Mitzvah.”
Carol Berman and Esther Kartus of Party Art knew their client loved Halloween and although her Bat Mitzvah was in March, they thought it would be a great theme, any time of year.
They cast their spell, and together with their graphic artist, created a great logo and invitation along with “spook-tacular” decor, entertainment and favors.
A wicked good time was had by all.
The photographer was Sasha Israel Photography.
The pocket fold invitation was sealed with Hannah’s name in a “scary” font
The creative invitation had a refined look in a Gothic font with clever wording
Hannah’s logo was used throughout the party
One of the entertainers “scared” guests as they entered the reception
A costumed entertainer captured the spirit of the party
Haunted decor and entertainment lurked around
Votive candles, zombies and witches decorated the candle lighting display
Artfully placed skulls, cobwebs and creepy crawlers
Hannah’s logo was projected on a large screen with scary movies playing
Take a napkin…if you dare!
The sign-in door with Hannah’s logo
Bone-chilling tattoos for the guests along with wax hands, hearts and eye balls
Make-your-own Wax Hands was the perfect Halloween-themed interactive entertainment
Party favors for the adult guests were lanterns with an LED candle inside
The bewitching party favor for the kids was a black blanket with Hannah’s logo and a thank you card attached
We thank Party Art, LLC for sharing this frightful and delightful Bat Mitzvah celebration. Happy Halloween!
The Goldfine family of Wayne, New Jersey, celebrated daughter Melissa’s Bat Mitzvah at Shomrei Torah in Wayne, New Jersey. The reception followed at Smoke Rise Village Inn, Kinnelon, New Jersey.
Melissa loves Broadway and wanted a “Broadway Bash.” As a special surprise much of the decor used for the party is now in her newly decorated bedroom, a perfect production!
Pictured L-R: Mom Hali, Brother Spencer, Bat Mitzvah girl Melissa and Dad Marc.
The photographer was Gary Flom Photography and the rest of the vendor information is at the end of the spotlight.
Melissa’s Torah invitation suite was from Invitation Consultants. The shimmering white invitation featured an illustrated pink Torah motif and it all fit in a shimmering black pocket. Melissa’s name was featured in a scripted font
The custom stamp from Zazzle.com hinted at her theme
The day began with a customized, intimate ceremony that led into a wonderful celebration with Melissa’s closest friends and family. Having a child with special needs, a Bat Mitzvah wasn’t something the family was planning, but a wonderful Hebrew school principal and Rabbi who has known Melissa since birth, made them re-think it. A simpler service, Rosh Chodesh, was presented as an option and one of the available dates turned out to be June 29. The family felt it was beshert, Yiddish for “meant to be,” as June 29th was also mom Hali’s Bat Mitzvah date!
Melissa wanted a beautiful pink tallit and she got it
Rabbi Randall Mark, who also did Melissa’s baby naming, was at her side
The service program
The party could only have a Broadway theme as Melissa lives, loves and breathes all-things stage musicals.
Dad Marc does special effects and graphics for a video company and one of his colleagues created “Melissa’s Broadway Bash” logo. From the stamps, to the centerpieces and the sign-in door, the logo tied the whole theme together.
No table numbers were needed, as each table was one of the shows Melissa saw and loved. The centerpieces, under the art direction of Dad Marc, were created by Party Art. As they made their way into the reception guests picked up their place cards
Playbill inspired place cards
The tables looked awesome
Each table centerpiece was a favorite Broadway show of Melissa’s
The tables were draped in black and accented beautifully with pink napkins
The montage was set to the song “For Good” from Wicked and served as Melissa’s introduction. She then danced onto the dance floor after it ended to the song “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray. Melissa was so happy making her entrance
More Than Music with MC Jared, provided great entertainment and the dancers kept guests on the dance floor the whole time! It was a great afternoon and Melissa was all smiles!
Dad Marc and Melissa danced to “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof…of course!
A beautiful moment
A cake topper and delicious cupcakes from the Pink Cake Box.
The candle lighting ceremony, in keeping with the theme, was The Tony Awards. “Best Grandma and Grandpa,” “Best Uncle,” etc… Each recipient was given a 5″x 7″ frame with their Tony Award. They sent the “winners” photos of them lighting their candle with Melissa to put in the frame. All the candle lighting songs and intro songs were from Broadway shows.
Melissa and Brother Spencer with all the candles lit
Melissa’s sign-in door is now her “stage door” in her bedroom. Dad Marc re-created the logo out of wood, changing the word “bash” to “room” and made a stand with locking wheels so the door could be transported to the different rooms at Smoke Rise to be signed throughout the day. Guests signed special notes to Melissa on her door
A star-worthy door!
We love how Mom Hali incorporated the room decor from the Bat Mitzvah into Melissa’s bedroom.
This bedroom is worthy of a Tony Award for sure!
For an end of June party the favors were beach towels, perfect for boys and girls. Everything was labeled with a logo’d “Thank you” sticker and name
Beautiful black beach towels with pink and white embroidery
The adults received chocolate comedy/tragedy masks
Looks like there is another performer in the family!
Since the family was not allowed to take photos during Melissa’s Mitzvah project here is part of her very meaningful speech:
So many of you have helped my family and I raise money for the March of Dimes as an Ambassador family for the past 13 years and giving back to others has become second nature for me. I strive to make a difference whenever and wherever I can so for my Mitzvah Project I wanted to do something special. I hope to work with children when I grow up and I enjoy reading to them so I have been spending time at The Wanaque Center where 72 children live because of their fragile medical conditions. Many of them are in wheelchairs and dependent on ventilators like I had when I was born. They don’t get a lot of visitors during the week so they are always happy when they see me. For me, the Mitzvah Project did not seem like a sacrifice and I plan to continue going as long as I can. My parents have taught me to always be grateful for the blessings I have and I will carry this forward long after my Bat Mitzvah day.
Some advice from Mom Hali:
“Don’t over think things. I was told that over and over throughout the year and it was great advice. So many specifics that seemed important during the planning stages really get lost in the noise and excitement of the day. The DJ you choose absolutely sets the tone for your party so make sure you choose one who understands what you are looking for, allowing you to just enjoy the party with your guests. Everyone was up and enjoying themselves from start to finish. More than one guest commented on how no one left early! We made the decision to not have games and lounge furniture that would take the kids away from the dance floor which worked out for our party. We also did not want to incorporate the theme for the service. The day is about your child having this rite of passage and all of the work, Hebrew School, tutoring, etc…, that goes in to that. The reception is than an opportunity to celebrate all that your child has accomplished. One of our greatest takeaways is that more than 99% of our guests were at the synagogue to see Melissa up on the bimah.”

The beautiful venue was Westbury Manor in Westbury, New York and the decor was creatively brought to life by Themes and Dreams of Merrick, New York.
Setting the tone for the theme was this invitation from Mandell Marketing

Drew Lerman of Merrick, New York and Morgan Mass of Bellmore, New York, are 7th graders and great friends.
Drew and Morgan came up with a fun way to combine their Mitzvah Projects to include their friends and raise money for pediatric cancer.
Their project is called Mitzvah Mash. It will take place on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at the Bellmore Jewish Center in Bellmore, New York. Both families are proud members of the Bellmore Jewish Center and Drew and Morgan will have their upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies there.
We learned more information about this terrific idea directly from Morgan and Drew. Please read below to see how you can be part of the fun and support a great cause:
MM: Can you give us details about your Mitzvah Project? Morgan/Drew: It’s a party that none of our parents can make! After 13 years of friendship we have decided to work together on a Mitzvah Project that is close to our hearts. We wanted to host a really cool hang-out with all our friends from both our communities who are in 7th grade. It is really hard to get a big group of kids together for a hang out, so we thought about having a two hour social called a “Mitzvah Mash.”
Morgan and Drew as young friends
MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular project? Morgan/Drew: A close family friend was diagnosed with cancer four years ago. It was a very overwhelming experience helping her through such a hard time. She battled for close to a year and we were there to support her every step of the way. We are so happy to say that she is in full remission and doing what every seven year old girl should be doing.
MM: Does your project have a start and end date, if so what are they? Morgan/Drew: Our project will take place on Sunday, October 12, 2014, from 8-10pm at The Bellmore Jewish Center in Bellmore, New York. We asked that admission costs be sent in advance to help the party get started in a timely fashion. We will have a great time, there will be music, snacks and lots of fun.
MM: In your own words, what does it mean to you to do a Mitzvah Project for your Bar/Bat Mitzvah? Morgan/Drew: Doing a Mitzvah Project for our upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvahs makes us feel special. Our Mitzvah Project is very close to our heart and it makes us feel good inside that we are doing something important for other children with cancer. We hope that with the money we raise and donate they will come closer to finding a cure to fight this horrible disease.
MM: If it involves a donation, what are you doing to spreading the word? Morgan/Drew: We have created flyers, posted them on social media sites, and we have emailed our family and friends. Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital is an organization that will always welcome donations.
MM: Is there anything else we need to know about your Mitzvah Project? Morgan/Drew: This is an event for only 7th graders in the Bellmore/Merrick communities, regardless of religion. Admission is $20.00/person and we would appreciate it being sent in advance of October 12, 2014. Our DJ is Ben, who is known as DJBEKRO!! He is a community member and high school student. He is volunteering his time for this amazing cause. For any questions please contact our moms, Andrea Mass at 516-313-4986 or Jenn Lerman at 917-648-4952.
The Terr family of Yardley, Pennsylvania, celebrated the Bar Mitzvah of their son Alex at Congregation Beth El, in Yardley, Pennsylvania. A reception followed at The Buck Hotel, Feasterville, Pennsylvania.
Alex is a huge New York Mets fan so the family came up with an Amazin’ theme, Alex’s Bar Metsvah…how clever!
Pictured L-R: Mom Robin, Bar Mitzvah boy Alex, Dad Hal and sister Courtney.
Serendipity Studios was the photographer and the rest of the vendor information is at the end of the spotlight.
Congregation Beth
The service held at Congregation Beth El, was attended by many family and friends.
The acrylic invitation, designed by Mom Robin was created with the New York Mets color palette of bright orange and royal blue. There was also an RSVP postcard and a round baseball-sized acrylic reception card. The acrylic invitation featured Alex’s initials
The envelope for the RSVP
The party information, made on a baseball-sized acrylic reception card, directed guests to the Terrific Website containing all the party information
The family looked great and incorporated royal blue accents in their Mitzvah style.
Alex’s Bar Metsvah was the obvious choice as Alex is a New York Mets fan. In addition to the invitation, the flowers, kippot, linen, cake, signature adult drinks, and chocolate lollipops all reflected the colors of his favorite team.
Mom designed Alex’s logo and his Website (www.Terrificmitzvah.com), a clever play on their last name, Terr. The logo was used on the invitations, paparazzi backdrop, custom dance floor wrap, flowers as well as the signage throughout the event.
Following the team’s colors of royal blue and orange, the place cards, decor, flowers and linens all followed suit. Balloon Celebrations created the baseball player silhouettes and buffet décor. Precious Petals did the amazing floral arrangements.
The adult place cards were designed as sports tickets directing guests to tables named after sections in Citi Field
This is the centerpiece for the kids’ place card/press pass table
The gift box was decorated with New York Mets gift wrap and the banner featured some of Alex’s favorite New York Mets players
The flower arrangements included over ten dozen regulation baseballs. The family purchased the baseballs and donated them to the North Trenton, New Jersey Little League after the event
Table names were similar to those at Citi Field such as, “The Pepsi Porch,” an area in right field that extends over the playing field
The step and repeat banner for picture-taking featured Alex’s logo
Some of the floral arrangements included orange gerber daisies on royal blue crystals in a clear vase
Baseball player silhouettes sat on top of royal blue linens with orange napkins
The buffet and food signage were actual vendors found at Citi Field
Music Express provided the music entertainment and kept things lively on the dance floor. Alex made his entrance with a smile
Alex waved his rally towel during the horah
Alex looked great in his blue vest
The kids and the adults packed the dance floor
Custom rally towels were fun for guests to wave
Alex’s grandfather, Wally Libenson, did close-up magic during the cocktail hour for the adults as well as an illusion during the Kiddush. He used a New York Mets color-themed changing magic wand during candle lighting.
Everyone had a custom scorecard listing candle lighting participants and the evening’s menu.
The New York Mets themed Bar Mitzvah cake was created by Brendenbeck’s Bakery. You don’t have to be a New York Mets fan to enjoy and appreciate this cake!
Other desserts included a variety of baseball themed chocolates
Creative Screenprinting and Embroidery created the Terrific favors.
Alex has volunteered with the Jewish Relief Agency (JRA) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, since he was five years old. The family volunteers monthly at the JRA’s warehouse packing and delivering food to families in need. In order to highlight Alex’s Mitzvah Project, the family had custom baskets of food in lieu of flowers on the bimah during the service.
Advice from Mom Robin:
“For my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah I used a party planner, but felt that I didn’t get to participate enough in the design aspects. This time, I designed the décor and outsourced the printing and production. For the actual party, I hired a friend to be the on-site coordinator of all of the vendors. This worked out great since I got to participate creatively, but didn’t have to worry about setup or logistics the day of the party.”
The following vendors helped to make Alex’s celebration special. If you give any of them a call, please let them know you read about their services on MitzvahMarket.com.
