Sports is a common theme for a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah celebration. Many details are centered around the theme including the stamp for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah invitation.
Exciting news! The U.S. Postal Service dedicated the first-of-its-kind stamps with the look and feel of balls used in eight popular sports. Available nationwide the Have a Ball! Forever stamps depict balls used in baseball, basketball, football, golf, kickball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Now, without creating a custom stamp, you can incorporate your child’s favorite sport on your Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah invitation envelope.
A special coating is applied to selected area of the stamp during the printing process giving them a texture that mimics the feel of a baseball’s stitching; a golf ball’s dimples; a tennis ball’s seams; a soccer ball or volleyball’s textured panels and the different raised patterns of a football, basketball and kickball.

Stock up now! Stamps can be purchased at your local Post Office, at usps.com or by calling 800-782-6724.

Mindi Shaevitz of Flower Power Designs provides event decor and planning services for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. She recently designed a Bat Mitzvah around the Bat Mitzvah girl’s first name and favorite designer.
Chloe is a true fashionista and since her initials, C.C., are the same as one of the most fashionable icons, Coco Chanel, Chlo Chlo Chanel was the perfect theme and logo!
The party took place at the Westin Governor Morris in Morristown, New Jersey.
Bat Mitzvah Decor
Flower Power Designs used the famous interlocking C's for the logo and throughout the party. In the center of the room was the oversized custom logo'd dance floor
The purple uplighting really dressed up the space. Here is Chloe in the teen lounge celebrating her Bat Mitzvah in style
The lounge spaces consisted of white couches with logo'd cocktail tables, creating a contemporary and comfortable space for guests to relax and take a break from dancing
The color palette was purple and silver. The adult guest tables were draped in silver linen with tall acrylic centerpieces of floral arrangements in shades of purple
Oversized posters were hung around the ballroom and custom logo'd lamp shades were in the kids' lounge
Special Party Details
For the place cards, Flower Power Designs used the logo and added some bling, creating a really fun look
The custom-made acrylic sign-in board where guests left special messages for the guest of honor
For the candle lighting, thirteen cylinders with floating candles were used for an elegant touch
Candy Buffet/Favors
Custom purple and silver candy buffet
Favors in silver bags were placed in cubbies for guests to pick up on their way out

Some Mom Advice from Audrey
“The key is staying organized and setting goals each week prior to the event so you can have a stress-free week leading up to the event. I found that keeping a binder of all contracts, notes, and lists kept me organized. Planning well ahead of time also helped when last minute unexpected things happened…because they did. I also found that picking pictures for the montage took the longest so try to work on that way ahead of time. You won’t want to sift through thousands of pictures right before the event when you’ll have plenty of other last minute things to take care of.”

Benjamin (“Benjy”) Schneider has been hard at work on his Mitzvah Project with the help of his sister Madison. When the family moved to Pelham, New York about ten years ago, Madison made her first friend, Daniel. Daniel was later diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. They remained friends and share a very special bond.
Last year, Benjy and Madison learned that Daniel does not play in the same sports league with his Pelham friends so he doesn’t have shirts that boast the name of their town. This amazing brother-sister team came up with the idea of Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA). This is a Pelham Rec event in which children of ALL abilities come together to play, find commonalities, and celebrate differences.
All pictures courtesy of Deborah Karson. Featured left: Benjy, Madison and Daniel
We asked Benjy and Madison a few questions about the Mitzvah Project:
MM: Why did you decide to take on this particular project?
B&M: At 18 months, our friend Daniel was diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. While our paths have crossed through the Pelham School system, we have had very different experiences. We wanted to help Daniel and his friends with their sports leagues so they could have a similar experience to us.
MM: Give us details on what you decided to do to help.
B&M: Last June, we organized soccer teams comprised of kids of ALL abilities. The goal was to have ALL children play together. Training consisted of 15-20 minutes of basic practice, given by high school or middle school students and a 30 minute scrimmage. Our middle school/high school trainers refereed, or helped kids who needed additional guidance on the field. If there were children interested in helping out in other capacities (i.e. volunteering at the check in desk, t-shirt distribution, keeping score/referee, etc.,), we were happy to accommodate. The first event was held on June 11, 2016 at Glover Turf Field and we had approximately 60 attendees.
The gang from Athletes Helping Athletes

Learning some drills
MM: Tell us about your next event.
B&M: Because our event last June was scheduled during a baseball tournament, Benjy’s teammates, who had hoped to volunteer, could not be involved. Benjy’s amazing coach, Mike Leak, volunteered to help us with the next event. Last November, Pelham AHA held “BASEBALL UNDER THE LIGHTS.” Around 80 children took to the appropriately named Friendship Field to learn about America’s favorite pastime.
MM: Do you have another event coming up?
B&M: Our friend Daniel is an avid hockey player so our next event was to be held on the ice to celebrate his prowess! Unfortunately, after much investigation, we learned that the local rinks did not have adaptive equipment for skaters with disabilities and we switched our next event to basketball, which took place on May 12, 2017. Through this event, we hoped to raise enough funds to purchase an adaptive sled and two walkers so that children with disabilities in our area have the option to ice skate. A sled would enable a more severely disabled child to skate with a parent/friend, who could push from behind.
MM: Anything else we need to know about your Mitzvah Project?
B&M: We are excited to announce that Athletes Helping Athletes was granted money from the Pelham Civics Association to acquire the adaptive equipment they need so ALL children can ice skate together this fall. With the $1,500 grant, and a matching corporate donation, AHA is able to fund the sleds and walkers. We are working with a lawyer, who has volunteered his time pro bono, to help AHA become a 501(c)(3).
We are all very excited about this project as there are several children for whom this will make a huge difference. These kids have never been on the ice before and we believe every child should have this experience! The support of our town has been overwhelming. It is amazing to think that a little girl and Bar Mitzvah boy’s wish to level the playing field and play with a family friend could make such a difference.
We thank Benjy and Madison for sharing their Mitzvah Project with our readers.

Melissa Andre Events, a leading Los Angeles and Toronto based special events planning and design firm, recently planned a Bat Mitzvah with a Parisienne theme, design and decor. Owner and Creative Director Melissa Andre was inspired by Paris and everything from table setting to decor elements referenced that beautiful city. She made Paris come to life in one of the largest film studios available in Toronto and created this wonderland like a true movie set.
Tres Chic Bat Mitzvah Decor
The high ceilings of the venue were decorated with floating cotton clouds and miniature sized hot air balloons
The hot air balloons floated above the long tables. A banner, which translates to "The Garden of Lily", hung just below the balloons
There were custom walls to make you feel like you were on the streets of Paris. There were even pastel door fronts for shops like a Patisserie, Perfumerie and chic boutiques
Cozy banquettes were set up to enjoy the view and eat
Guests found their place cards on this vintage wrought iron gate
Magnifique Party Details
In opposite corners of the venue, there were parks- a Zoo and an Enchanted Garden. Each park featured life size animals like elephants, zebras and giraffes, made of green bushes
A working carousel that guests could ride was beautiful and fun
We love these hand-made beautiful miniature golden carousel horse pedestals that sat atop each menu. They look so dainty with the signature diagonal design rose centerpieces
A 6 foot tall Eiffel Tower made entirely of gumballs, candy, cake, and everything sweet
Guests felt like they shopping in Paris as they got to customize their Converse
La Vie en rose was one of the designs guests could choose
We thank Melissa Andre Events for sharing this wonderful Bat Mitzvah with our readers.

Mom To Mom Advice From Carolyn:
“As part of the Mitzvah Market team, I’m constantly learning about new Bar and Bat Mitzvah ideas. I had to really focus on what my kids wanted for their celebration since we couldn’t use all the terrific vendors I work with. My advice would be to let your kids have a say in the decisions regarding the extra entertainment, favors and some of the other details. It’s their party and I feel it made sense for my family to have them involved as much as possible. Try to remember what the service and celebration will mean to your family and stop to take it all in because it will be over before you know it!”

There are many opportunities to personalize your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah service.
We have found many examples of families who chose to customize the outside and/or inside of their kippot.
Inscriptions on the inside usually include the child’s name and Bar or Bat Mitzvah service date. An additional message on the inside can be an unexpected surprise for your guests attending the service.

Phyllis Skolnick of Extraordinary Productions and her team recently produced a “SoFly, SoFab, SoFun” themed Bat Mitzvah for a girl named Sophia. The party took place at the Short Hills Hilton in Short Hills, New Jersey. Extraordinary Productions brought in all of the amazing decor elements including: artwork on the ballroom doors, upholstered pink couches, plexi-glass tables, a gorgeous velvet bar and carpeted the entire room in a light grey carpet! They flipped the typical ballroom set up and used it in a fresh new way.
Andy Foster was the photographer.
Special Touches
One of the stand-out design elements were the entrance doors into the ballroom. They were covered in a watercolor artwork, which resembled Sophia’s dress
Extraordinary Productions wrapped the dance floor in a white vinyl application. They added a ballet pink coordinating border and finished it off with Sophia’s SoFly logo. Other fun name inspired logos used were "SoFab" and "SoFun"
This custom made tufted velvet bar was a major focal point in the room. It had a back bar and silver mirror credenza. The top shelf allowed the designer to display flowers, candles and photos
Bat Mitzvah Decor
The room was dressed in a pale pink, grey and white color palette with a light grey carpet Extraordinary Productions designed and produced white plexi dining tables and covered the round tables with ballet pink linens. Guests sat in clear Lucite chairs
Rectangular tables framed the room. Lucite candelabras, flowers and votives on these tables made the room look so dramatic. The place cards were placed at each table so guests could easily find their seats
The lush centerpieces included different shades of pink and white orchids, roses and hydrangeas
The beautiful view of the dance floor and stage from the tables was enhanced by the pink up lighting
We thank Extraordinary Productions for sharing this beautiful party with our readers.

The Nussbaum family from Scarsdale, New York, celebrated their daughter Rebecca’s Bat Mitzvah on February 27, 2016 with a party in the evening at Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, New York.
Rebecca’s party was designed around her fun theme Really Rebecca and the idea really took off! On the suggestion of Rebecca’s grammy, who passed away a few months before the Bat Mitzvah, the color Tiffany blue was incorporated into the invitation, decor and fashion decisions. She was the one who suggested the color to complement Rebecca’s beautiful blue eyes.
Pictured L-R: Dad Mitch, Mom Caroline, Brother Matthew, Bat Mitzvah girl Rebecca and Brother Andrew.
Mike Cafaro from iNsYnc Photography was the photographer and the rest of the vendor information is listed at the end of the spotlight.

Rebecca's logo on the back looked Really fabulous
Mitzvah Project
Rebecca loves art. She spent a few Saturdays at a library in New Rochelle that hosted art project events for kids from low income families. One afternoon she helped them make homemade holiday gifts.
Advice from Mom Caroline
“Be organized and don’t panic that you’re not doing everything for the event months in advance – much of it happens closer to the date. Of course book your venue and vendors such as your entertainment company and photographer way in advance. Next would be the invitations, which I find so often can help guide you for your color scheme and possible theme. Everything comes together – it always does. Whatever CAN be done in advance should get done, but don’t rush things such as giveaways, favors and games for the kids because things change so quickly these days. You might want the latest ‘this and that’ and would hate to have spent time and money on things early just to be done.”
