This NYC themed Bat Mitzvah had it all! From invitations featuring the scenic skyline to Metrocard place cards and a Statue of Liberty candle lighting centerpiece, Vanessa Tawil’s love of the city was clear. A black and white color scheme, with a pop of blush pink (to match Vanessa’s dress), created a sophisticated, feminine look for the Bat Mitzvah reception. Mitzvah Mom Jen, who planned the event herself, says parents don’t need to make the event “over the top.” “With a little creativity you can create a memorable event on any budget,” she says. Great advice for everyone!
Photo above (L-R): mom Jen, Bat Mitzvah girl Vanessa, dad Michael. The photographer for this event was Gregory Perry Photography. A complete list of Vendors follows at the end of this spotlight.

Mitzvah Advice
“Don’t feel any pressure to ‘go over the top’ with the reception, says mom Jennifer. “With a little creativity you can create a memorable event on any budget. In my opinion, the two things that matter most are the food and the DJ. Everything else is supplementary.” Jennifer adds: “Do your research on Google, Pinterest and Social Media to get ideas and ask friends for recommendations. Luckily, this was the second mitzvah I planned so I was very organized and I knew which items need to be prioritized and which could be placed on the back burner. This was especially important because I was also supporting my husband’s local election campaign at the same time! This last aspect is what required me to get ‘creative’ with where I needed to spend the most or the least amount of money. So stick to your budget and I promise you will not look back on this special day wishing you had spent more money on the decor ”
Mitzvah Project
Vanessa participated in three Midnight Run events organized by her synagogue. Midnight Run coordinates groups to distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City. The late-night relief efforts create a forum for trust, sharing, understanding and affection. That human exchange, rather than the exchange of goods, is the essence of the Midnight Run mission.

Choosing a fun, clever Bar or Bat Mitzvah tagline can be as easy as looking at your child’s initials. For Ryan Finkelstein of New Jersey, “Ready For…” became the jumping off point for several creative graphics and logos, that when combined with bright green and LED decor, resulted in a unique “Glow” Mitzvah.
Following a Bar Mitzvah service, the reception was held at Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment, which offers multiple event spaces in one venue. The Finkelstein’s held Ryan’s cocktail hour on the Terrace Rooftop, with views of New York City, and the reception took place in the Trackside room which features an easy-to-transform open layout. Lisa Ivler Events utilized a black, white and neon green color scheme that had Ryan’s guests Ready For… plenty of fun!
They used Dina Bustin Photography and the rest of the information is listed at the bottom of the spotlight.
Rooftop Cocktail hour
Guests were directed to the rooftop cocktail hour with a sign that introduced the party's bold graphics and color scheme
Ryan's friends were definitely Ready For fun as they made their way up the escalator to the event space
Custom logos were featured on LED screens at the outside bar
It was a beautiful night and guests enjoyed the open air cocktails
Ryan's friends had a blast running around the rooftop
An incredible sushi display was topped only by...
Amazing views of the sun setting over the historic race track!
Glowing Reception
Oversized initials made of plaster greeted guests as they entered the reception
Friends "signed in" on this unique neon green locker, customized with the RF logo
A green glow was cast throughout the space; from floor to ceiling and accented at place settings
Centerpieces were designed with hydrangea, infinity candles, green lighting, and glow stick napkin rings
The kids' lounge was filled with LED furniture, black lounge sofas and custom pillows
Close-up of custom pillows with glowing logo
The kids' bar was backlit with green and offered tween-friendly drinks
Oversized photos from Ryan's pre-Mitzvah photo shoot flanked both sides of the adult bar, with his Mitzvah logo in the center
Signature cocktails allowed adult guests to “ReFresh and ReFuel”
Green lights, suspended from the ceiling added to the glow factor
A giant LED screen with Ryan's tagline made a great backdrop for the dance floor
Smaller LED screens (normally used to broadcast Meadowland's races) featured Ryan's signature logo
Ryan and his family
The DJ kept the dance floor packed
End of Night Treats
Dance floor swag included custom jerseys, hats, t-shirts and shorts
For favors, Ryan's friends took home white or black logo hoodies with cozy sweatpants or flannels
Close up of logo flannels and pants
Favors went home in RF logo drawstring bags
Close up of favor bags
Favorite dessert of the night - a chocolate fountain loaded with items to dip
Some graphic liberties turned Rita’s into Ryan’s for some fun icy treats
Kids (and adults!) lined up for the sweet treats
The oversized RF letters were repurposed at the end of the night
Guests were offered ReFresh waters on the way home
