Shabbat Candle Lighting: FridayLight.org

Mitzvah Mom Sherry told us about a cool website, www.fridaylight.org, which is all about Shabbat candle lighting.

FridayLight is part of an ongoing Shabbat candle lighting campaign initiated in September, 1974 by the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

This campaign was launched to encourage Jewish women and girls to bring the light of Shabbat into their home by fulfilling the Mitzvah of lighting Shabbat candles on Friday evening, 18 minutes before sunset.

In particular, this campaign hoped to restore the age-old custom with young girls and encourage them to light their own candle.

On the FridayLight.org Website, you can purchase their FridayLight starter-kit. This first one if free! Each additional kit is $3.50 and the price is right as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah favor!

The kit includes everything you need to begin your tradition. FridayLight scented tea light candles and matches; a How to FridayLight Guide, as well as a beautiful neck charm to help you connect with the growing community of “FridayLighters,” all in a reusable tin box which doubles as a handy candle tray

Maybe this could be the start of a nice tradition in your house.
